Bought 50 Neon Tetra a few days ago and I saw one has a slightly twisted spine.

I had bought 20 Neon Tetra quite sometime ago, one has a twisted spine as well and another has a crooked face.
Both are doing well in my tank though.

I have the feeling that the supply I am getting from had gone through too many inbreeding.
Or are 1 or 2 with defect in 50 is normal?

out of 50 i would say that this isn't that odd of an amount to have issues. It really just depends, most good LFS will get move out any imperfect stock, heck even a worker at petsmart told me that she was allowed to take home any imperfect fish, so she had a community tank that looked like the island of misfit toys.

Inbreeding is possible since you got them all from the same spot. Neons in the hobby today are almost exclusively tank bred and not caught from the wild anymore. The chance of your LFS having a huge amount of stock(or wherever you got em from) and 90% of those being from the same family is quite high. I like to shop around when I buy to avoid getting too many from one area(I'm also lucky enough to have 5 or 6 LFS'). 70 is quite a handful lol good luck with them

I think my Neon are from the same supplier.
The first batch of 20 are bad, since I have 2 defects out of 20.
One is named crooked face and the other twisted spine.

The new 50 are quarantined in 3 different tanks.
30/10/10.
Although 2 from the 30 had died due to my experiment on water temperature(direct afternoon sun for hours).
The rest are doing well, except one which is moving around like a robot fish.
(Edit: Just realized that the robot fish is suffering from dropsy).

After 2 weeks when they are much bigger, I will let 28 of the new fish to join the 20 mature fish.

10 will stay with my Red Phantom, glowlight and Paraguay Tetra.
I have to say my Red Phantom and Paraguay are really aggressive among each other.

The other 10 will be kept on their own for some experiment purposes.

i got 6 for my ten g today they all seem well been established for about 7 months now so hope most stick around..

But ive been reading ALOT on the inbreeding and so on and so fourth. I live in dallas so there are a few "reputable" lfs's here. Major city..

But with that being said can any one suggest methods of obtaining quality specimens? Fish clubs? any online dealers that have blown you away ?
