Neighbors breeding dog irresponsibly.

Kind of a rant and a thread about backyard dog breeding.

One of my neighbors has ventured into backyard breeding, he has 3 puppies, probably 4-5 month old. They all appear to be mutts, probably from other backyard breeders too. He leaves them in his yard during the day and only lets them in the house after he gets home from work. I really doubt he is training or socializing them. I know he is going to breed them because he has offered to sell me puppies. He told me he was going to breed dogs and will have lots of puppies for sell, he said I could have one for only $100 because we are neighbors. ?

Have anyone else encountered this? So irresponsible!

Hi, no, I have not encountered that issue.
What exactly is the breed as some dogs enjoy being outside during the day?
I have a few dogs and on occasion they are outside. Mine are a mixture of types and sizes.
I have two Shih Tzu and one Maltese, an American Bullye Dog, and a Lab/Standard Poodle cross. Three are rescue and one came from a "backyard" breeder-a friend of mine and lastly one came from a different breeder.
I don't quite understand the issue. Are they in a fenced in yard? Is there protection in the yard? If the neighbor is bringing them in after work, I would hope they are being socialized and taught obedience.
Anyway, that this is disturbing you and maybe you should see if you can help the neighbor to fix what is broken.
I guess I ranted as well!

Yea some dog love to be outside. A friend of mine has an Alaskan malamute that practically lives outside in the winter. The dog does mind he can be cover in foot of snow and he is happy. I thought backyard breeding was illegal. Claire I have a cross of your two dogs it's a shih tzu Maltese.

My issue isn't them being outside, they don't exactly have a dog house but its not that cold out anymore.

I am bugged by the fact that he intends to breed them and sell the puppies for profit. I don't like it when people just putting 2 random dogs together to breed. Its one thing to have accidents but to intentionally breed dogs without vet checks, healthy history and etc is not responsible in my opinion. I don't think he is driven by love for dogs (even then, there are lots of homeless puppies in shelters), I think he brought them solely to make puppies for profit. Its no different than a puppy mill...just more small scale.

I do get what you are saying. It is too bad that this person does not understand the responsibilities of dog ownership.
Yes, we have multiple dogs-all are spayed or neutered and I would never breed random dogs for profit.
Too bad he does not have a better understanding because if you are to breed dogs, quality matters!

Although the same could be said for many fish breeders... but to the point, you should call the police. In some provinces in Canada there are breeding laws and maybe even municipal regulations limiting how many dogs are allowed to be kept in a single residential household. What he is doing could be illegal, even though it's somewhat unlikely...

I agree the same could be said for fish breeders, aswell as any other breeder. I dis like the whole "use" of any animal for money in your own pocket basically tossing animals around as if their sweets from a sweet shop. The fact he said you can have the pup cheaper because your his neighbour Is a joke, its quite dis respectful to any animal in that scenario and very selfish in some.
Some people don't understand animals have feelings too, they live and breathe just like we do. I'm pretty sure they wouldnt constantly want to have babies and never to see them again.
This makes me angry too! If you hadn't of guessed ;-)

If they are mutts how in the world does he expect to get anything for them? It's cheaper to go to the humane society and get one that has had it's shots. It sounds weird to me. Are you sure they are mutts? The only reason to breed dogs for profit is if you are doing it to get a certain breed. People don't pay big bucks for mutts, that is why mutts end up in shelters.

I breed a pair of cockatiels. I sell there babies for profit(not much for profit but more to buy more things for them. I don't breed them year round I breed them when is there season to breed. But if was up to them they will breed year round, they love raising babies there great parents.

Unfortunately, the Humane Societies here charge a small fortune for their pets. Just to adopt a cat is $150.00. I'm not even sure what they charge for a dog. Although I do not agree with what the neighbor is doing, as it does sound like plans for a minI puppy mill, your best bet is to check with a local humane society and find out what the laws are regarding the number of pets that can be kept in a household. Also, you could try advising the humane society that this person has admitted that he intends to indiscriminately breed multiple dogs for no reason other than to try to make money off of puppies.

If the shelter truly cares, they will start watching this guy. Give them his address... let them know how many dogs he already has. I am sure they will follow up. Also, if you have other neighbors that you are good friends with, you may wish to let them know what buddy is planning, hopefully they will object, too.

There is no licensing or anything required to breed dogs here, you can have a max. of 4 dogs but puppies don't count until 6 month. I don't think there is anything you can do legally to prevent him from breeding his dogs. I emailed the shelter about whether this is legal but they never replied. I assume it is since kijijI is always filled with cheap puppies for sale.

I am not sure if they are mutts but they don't like any purebreds I know. One is a fluffy husky looking puppy, other looks like yellow lab and the third one is pretty small, it looks like a some sort of terrier.

I don't understand why anyone would intentionally breed second rate anything.

Just like me and my bettas. Spend $50 for a pair and I might make some of what I invest in equipment, time, and effort back. The difference between $50 for a quality pair and $10 for pet store bettas is insignificant compared to the cost of raising them, so why be cheap with the original stock and end up with bettas you at best can hope to give away.

I am sure it is the same with dogs. Although there isn't much equipment needed, it sure seems like a whole lot of work to raise a litter of puppies. Even if he gets $100 each for say about 5 puppies (doubtful), by the time he is done feeding them and getting their shots and whatever other legal requirements he's lost money, not even mentioning the considerable amount of work involved. Sounds like he hasn't thought this through very well.

sounds like he isn't going to properly take care of them once he realizes how expensive proper care is. I just can't imagine someone paying even $50 for mutt puppies who don't have their shots or proper vet care up to date. Maybe you can get him to stop if the puppies become a health hazard or other legal nuisance?
