Need To Know Nitrate Reducing Plants

Floating plants are very good for this. I do not think that the nitrate automatically "vanishes." Most nitrate removal is a water change issue.
Dont believe it? My 180 reduces nitrates that are added to the tank in the fertilizers to 0 within a day or two. I hate floating plants so I don't have them.

Unless you meant it won't work as fast as the op is seemingly hoping for. In which case, I agree.

Nitra-Zorb is suppose to decrease ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. With the water change and nitra-zorb I should be under 20ppm.

I just don't know how fast the nitrazorb works. Plants take a bit of time to consume nitrates.

Plants just arrived. Good amount of stems. Planted bacopia. About 8 stems. Also planted about 14-16 stems of Anacharis and floated about 7-8 stems all about 6-8 inches. Cleaned sand where I took the fake plants out removing about 2 gallons of water and replacing with conditioned water. Test water later today.

I have never used Nitra-zorb either but poly-filter is the bee's knees. It could help remove the ammonia before it even turns into nitrates for you Ed1957 . You could try pouring your water through the poly filter before you even put it in the aquarium.

The problem is he would constantly be buying new polyfilter. With what he is needing, that would get old quick. He can recharge nitrazorb easily.

I just looked up nitrazorb. That is pretty cool how it can be recharged! I've just used poly filter as an indicator and temporary solution during vacations or to remove medications so I guess I didn't really think about how much it would take to be doing that regularly.

The plants will take awhile to start working well so it could help in the short-term. Plants don't make a dent in nitrates unless they are growing quickly.

Water test. Only did nitrates. 10-20ppm. I can never tell the difference. Nitra-Zorb is pretty good. Not even 24 hours and removed at least 20ppm Nitrates. I now am floating 7 anacharis, 1 water wisteria. Something I am not sure of. Planted 14 or16 anacharis, 8 bacopia Carolina, 1 Amazon sword, 2 smaller swords. Another 4 stems that I don't have a clue what they are.

I will leave the Nitra-Zorb in until Friday. Water change 27% and see how the tank reacts.

Great your correction seems to be working.

Yup. I really appreciate all my forum buddies for pointing me in the right direction. Never knew there were Nitrate absorbing products. But they work well and fast. I was almost to give up on fish keeping but know I am starting to plan my 75 gallon Cichlid tank. Floating anacharis and water wisteria floating in the Cichlid tank. See how that works with weekly water changes.

Will update Wednesday what the nitrates are in the tank. Hoping 5ppm. Thanks again to all.

Permanent solution for around $100. Get two whirlpool single stage under sink filters (model #WHKF-DUF) $36 each, two carbon filters to fit (prices vary), plus a washer hose, short nipple and two hose adapters and build a two stage carbon filter. It's portable and will remove CL2 and some ammonia from your water for up to 20,000 gallons before you swap out the first stage filter. I keep mine in a hall closet with my 25' hose and attach it to the bathroom sink when I do water changes. I have 17 tanks and the most current filter is about seven months old. I live in DeLand and picked it all up at our Lowes.

I live in Daytona Beach (not beachside). Water spangles (salvinia) does a great job for me. I always have 0 nitrates in a heavily stocked 60 gallon tank (30 neons, 20 white clouds, 4 mystery snails, ~ 50 ghost shrimp, 5 amano shrimp, 3 bamboo shrimp, ~ 400 painted fire cherry shrimp). It grows fast enough to double in a week. I take out maybe 2 heaping handfuls every week. Granted, I do have a strong light and dose a capful of Flourish fertilizer weekly.

Water lettuce for sure. My tank before water lettuce shot to 20-40 by the end of a week. After I get the water lettuce, constant <10.

Thanks Stoka. I appreciate your offer. It would have to be snail free as I am not thrilled with snails. Do you have ammonia in your water like I do. And if yes how do you deal with it.

Live in a condo and have no room what so ever for anything larger than a foot by a foot under my sink. No closet space. I have high level light and fertilize once or twice a week.

Don’t have to worry about mystery snails, they don’t eat plants and they lay large bundles of big eggs above the waterline, not in your plants or gravel. I can guarantee no snail eggs. I can get the salvinia out of my 10 gallon. The mystery snails in there are too small to breed anyway if that helps. As for ammonia my water (Daytona Beach city water) has none. No nitrates either. pH of 7.1, kH of 3, gH of 5. Pretty good for my uses.

What water do I get in Daytona Beach Shores. Ocean side. I get over 1 ppm ammonia

I don’t think that Daytona Beach Shores has their own water treatment plant, they must buy it from another city, maybe South Daytona or Ormond Beach, I don’t really know.

I also neighboring live in Port Orange and also have 1ppm ammonia in mine as well.. I freaked when I first realized it but I was told to do bigger water changes less often. I now do almost 80 90% every almost two weeks and it seems to be working just fine and levels are staying lower for all my tanks.. I was doing about what you are 30 to 40% every week and it was a no-go levels were through the roof and constantly battling it..

I have3 tanks so doing more frequent water changes is tough. I have a 75, 36 and a 20. As it is it takes up a lot of time keeping the tanks running. I do water changes about every week. I increased the amount to 40-50% because I madethe75 a cichlid tank.
