Need Some Filter Suggestions Please For 55 Gallon Fancy Aquarium

Hello, I have a 55 gallon tank with 3 fancy telescope goldfish. I have 2 canister filters on it now, an Ehiem 2217 and an Eheim 2213. I am setting up a 20 long that will be heavily stocked. I plan on taking the 2213 off the 55 and putting it on the 20 long. I want to replace it with another Eheim canister filter. Not sure if I should get the same 2213 or upgrade to a 2215 or another 2217 or just leave the 2217 by itself. Any suggestions? 2217 cost twice as much as the 2213 btw. Thanks

The 2217 by itself is not quite enough I would say on the 55 gallon. Any of the 2213, 2215 or 2217 will by fine as an addition. You might even think about a HOB now to make up the difference. Easier to clean and you can add chemical filtration faster if needed.

I agree. I forgot to mention I need it to be dead quiet. Which is why I got the Eheims to begin with. Thanks!

OK. I would say any canister is dead quiet. And most are a lot cheaper in price than Eheims.

True, but most aren't as reliable as Eheims either.

I wouldn't go that far. Just as many 4 Star filters on Amazon from other manufactures with the same or better reliability. They all have their issues. I'm not here to push anything.

I've said this before. They all use about $30-40 in parts and sell for $70-200 or more. Having a little experience in the manufacturing world, the minimum selling point is 3.5x the manufacturing cost or more. It's what the market will bear.

I'll stick to what has worked for me for years and many others for years and years. Thanks for the feedback though

If the 2213/17 combo worked well for the 55g, stay with that and get another 2213 in my opinion.

If there is a possibility of your stock changing or increasing in the 55 gallon in the future, maybe then consider upgrading to the '15 or '17.

Andy305mia, do you use the Eheim Prefilter on the intakes? I have seen YouTube videos on them and they look quite interesting.

I've been using the same $50 canister filter for 2 years now with no issues at all. It looks like a sun sun but a lot cheaper. Cant remember the brand. Its rated for a 300 gallon tank but is used for a 55. When it comes to canister filters I find that the cheaper ones are just about as good as the more expensive ones.

Thanks I might just go with the 2215 so I can say I own all three lol jk. Its like $25 dollars more I think it might be worth it. I thought about getting pre-filters but unless you bag them to remove them they will dirty your tank like a sponge filter would when you try to clean them. I don't mind cleaning my canister filters every 3 months. With pre-filters I would probably be able to get twice the life, but honestly to me its not worth the hassle. People that have them love them so who knows maybe someday. They are pretty big as well from what I have read but they can be modified.

Yep, I have to use a gallon ziploc bag and slip it around my sponge filters before I lift them out of the tank.

If the '15 is only $25 more, I'd go w/ that.

It's always nice to have one of each model of anything!

Andy305mia, did you decide yet on the canister?

I ask because Dr Foster and Smith online has 20% off purchases today. DECSLE20 is code.

2213 is $78
2215 is $98

Free s&h, but they charge tax.

Also, look up their Eheim 1200XL Media Set Replacement. I don't know of you have any use for extra Eheim media, but they got ot for a steal right now.

It's on sale for $31 + 20% off = $25. Regular price is over $200.

Comes with 4l of Mech, 8l of Substrat Pro, a coarse sponge and 2 polishing pads. The sponge and pads can be cut up and used for other applications.

That comes out to be $2/liter for Eheim media + $0.33 each for the sponge and 2 pads!
