Need New Heater

Woke up this morning to find a dead hillstream loach in my 20 Long this morning.

When looking into potential issues, I realized my 100 watt Aqueon Pro heater must have stuck on, because the temp was almost 85 degrees. I'm surprised I didn't loose any other fish.

In the tank, I have a 50 watt Aqueon Pro adjustable heater, and a 100 watt version.

The 50 watt is doing okay on its own right now, keeping the tank at 76 degrees.

Tank is in a heated room, kept between 68 and 70.

Want to get a new heater to replace the broken 100 watt, but im wondering if I need another 100, or if another 50 watt would be okay.

Also, any heater I should be looking at? Or anything I should stay away from?

Thanks!

Same thing happened to me once (heater stuck on) and cooked all my fish. They either died from the heat or jumped out of the tank! You must have caught in time before it got too bad. Stay away from the cheap heaters. They all can fail like this.

I have switched to Eheim heaters. So far I have never had one that fails on! They only fail off. Aquarium heaters

Thats the frustration with heaters. I have heard people say all brands have failed. "They don't make em like they used to" definitely fits in this category. You could do either one. Another 50w run 2 one on each side.

I pulled out the broken 100 watt, and the 50 watt is still going, keeping it at 76 like I want. A second 50 watt would probably work and let them run at the same time.

I had originally bought the 100 watt in hopes of using it in a larger tank down the road (plan for the bigger tank so you buy once).
