Need help with betta breeding issue

Hello,

I've been trying to breed my two bettas. I've been giving them frozen blood worms and brine shrimp for almost a month now and decided to finally introduce them to each other a few days ago. My male has been making his nest, and the female had vertical stripes. But when I released her, they were doing okay, they were wiggling next to each other and flaring. But as soon as the female swam towards the bubble nest, my male nipped her tail and started chasing her around. Are they not compatible with each other? Or is this normal?

 

Sure eggs aren't already in the nest? Sounds kind of like post spawn behavior.

No, I've checked and there aren't any eggs

 

Did they actually wrap around each other until she “blacked out” for a few seconds?

i’ve found that less experienced males don’t always get it exactly right to get the girl to release the eggs, the boy gets their “moment of bliss” and assumes the female did too, and tries to “protect” the non-existing eggs from the female until he gets them into the nest….
Once he realises there are no eggs he goes in to try again, and again, and again, until hopefully he gets it right!

No, he actually wasn't able to wrap around her and it led to them fighting so I stopped trying. But, I tried different pair and now have three week old fries
