Need An Extra Hob Filter For My Tank

so I need another filter on my 65 gallon SA cichlid tank not for any filtration problems but as a backup and a source of surface aggitiation and oxygenation. I currently have a fluval 406 packed with biofoam, matrix, and purigen. chemical levels are perfect but I am not getting enough surface agitiation in my tank and I need it since its 24" tall. So I was looking at a few HOB filters to give me that added oxygenation. my first choice would be the seachem tidal 55 for the flow rate and the fact its a canister in HOB form, the second would be the marinland pengin with the 200 GPH flow rate, the third would be a aquaclear 55. I just want some feedback and want to know which I should get. I am leaning towards the seachem filter because of the built in oxygenation feature.

Add Circulation pump or wave maker, Fluval 406 is actually very good for your size tank since is design aquariums up to 100 gallons with Flow Rate (383 US GPH) you can also adjust hoses on each corner tank to get better flow..

This item is very good to improve circulation

I was just looking at the filter to get the almost 10X filtration that’s recommended in slightly overstocked cichlid tanks because of the amount of waste they produce. But if you think that I could get away with justa. Circulator pump that’s nice. Thank you.
Edit: the way I can tell I’m not getting enough circulation is that brown diatoms are growing in my tank.

Yes they call it dead spots, so for now I would invest in circulation pump the one I post might be little pricey but I like the settings that over night I am able to lower power and fish have calm water to rest..

My vote would be a Aquaclear 50. They are onsale right now for $35 online w/ free S&H. For a few $ more, the Aquaclear 70's are $49, they hold a lot more media and flow 300gph.

I own (2) AQ 30's, an AQ 70 and an AQ110.

You can throw the Purigen in the AQ 50 instead of the 406 canister. That way you can remove it to recharge it, without having to open up the canister.

On my 75 gallon tank with a Hydor 600 canister, I keep my 2 bags of Purigen in an Aquaclear HOB for that reason.

I'm of the opinion you can never have too much filtration, so I like the idea of a HOB instead of a

Let us know what you get and how it works.

Good luck.

I wanted to chime in on this because I have a 75 gallon African cichlid tank and I'm getting the same brown diatoms at the bottom and around some of the rocks/decos. I already have 2 canister filters (Sunsun 304B & an Eheim Pro4+ 250) and besides the media ( Lavarocks, Sponges, Poly-fill & 2 bags of Purigen), I know I'm very well filtered, just the dreaded brown algae (diatoms) issue. I just scrubbed everything out along with a 75% water change and 3 days later it returned if it wasn't for this particular thread, I would've never know the diatoms was being caused by poor circulation and dead-spots. I even bought me a giant pleco to help with the cleaning!

Getting ready to order the Sunsun JVP-201 Wavemaker/Circulator

Thank you everyone for your responses I’m right now thinking either a wave maker or a AC 50 gallon and load that with matrix and phosgaurdbto lower my silicates since that’s another cause of the brown diatom organism. I’m going to do more research on it and figure out which is the best circulator pump under $100 for my size tank. I’m leaning more towards the circulator though just because I am already almost at 6X filtration and have pleantly of mech, bio and chem filtration. I will probably add phosphogaurd to the currant chemical/ biological baskets in my filter to lower the silicates.

So I got a aquatop circulator pump since we had that one at work it does 1,321 GPH. I feel like this is too much turbulence for the juvenile green severum and the juvenile EB acara. I need some advice if I should exchange it for the one that only does 653 GPH. Also not sure where to put it. The fish are camped out on the bottom and not really swimming. I could only post a photo it wouldn’t let me upload a video.

Can you put the pump on a timer, so it shuts off at night for 8 hours to give them a "rest" from the current?

I will just unplug it but it’s a pretty simple one. Doesn’t have a lot of features. I may just order one and return this one once it gets here.
