Naming Fish?

Do you name your fish?

I know that most fish and tank owners do not name the creatures that live inside, and that's all good. But I do name my fish and here's why:
--Fish are still your pets. If you got a dog, would you just call it golden retriever or Labrador or whatever kind of dog it is?
I know that dogs and such need a name to call them and so they can respond to it, but still....
Anyway, I'm posting a poll. Do you name your fish or not?

I don't name my guppies, it seems a bit pointless to me to name a fish. I could understand if it was just one fish (i.e. a betta in a 5 gallon) but when you have 11 guppies it's unneeded and I prefer them to be unnamed and just be guppies.

Your comparison also doesn't work, although many fish-lovers would bash me for saying this fish don't have the same sentience and intelligence of dogs, and most fish don't form a bond with you, the only reason they come up to you when you go near the tank is because they think they are going to be fed. You name a dog because it's much more intelligent meaning it will respond to the name and dogs form psychological bonds with humans and vice versa, fish don't. This is why many people consider their dogs to be part of the family while pretty much nobody considers fish to be part of the family. Like I said, I know I've probably annoyed a lot of fish-lovers by saying this but it's the truth unfortunately.

I name them, sort of? I never go around and tell people "and the one with the red eyes is lily", I just give them nicknames and aliases and titles in my head. theyre all very silly in a way (SIP egg).

I don't have any schooling fish or a group of something that looks identical though, I wouldnt name those individually, only ones that stick out.

I name them once I'm sure they'll survive. They have normal names like Roly-Poly, Houdini, and Bloodfin- nothing really creative or fancy.

I only name really individualistic fish whose personality stick out to me. Right now two are named: The Bolivian ram, Melvin and Howard the platy. I give them human names because I think names like 'Sapphire' and 'Swimmy' are kind of dumb.

I should name a specific Guppy of mine. I only name fish that are distinctive or that I view as an individual. I view my Guppies and Least Killifish as colonies not individuals.

My one tank all my fish are named. Some are pretty dumb names but they're all named. The gourmI is Blue, Jupiter the goldfish, Sobek the ropefish, Sandy, Diego and California the dojo loaches, Raphy the striped Raphael catfish, and Harry the bristlenose.

I like those names. I keep fish that look mostly fish the same. The males can be quite unique. I can get a sense for some indivuduals with unique looks. I have named a few Guppies throughout the years. I once had a guppy with two heads. The other head was a parasitic twin and because that was dead. I have named this one female who was just do much bolder than the other fish.

That is a cute name. I use people names, just because I prefer it. I had two fish father and daughter I believe. One named Nag and the other Nagina. They were cobra Guppies and named after cobras in an Indian folktale.

He actually has a bit of blue on him. I was at PetSmart yesterday, impulse bought 2 of the guppies they were gonna put in with the oscars to get rid of them. A black/silver fancy guppy and a red and gold tuxedo.

Yes I do, our daughters love to help as well. My oldest named our betta Blue Water, and has determined that all fish have the last name water. She names schooling fish too, she just gives them all the same name. The diamond tetras she calls Sparkle Water, the loaches are Striped Water. The mystery snails Chestnut, Golden, and Blue. The nerite snails. Big Olive, Little Olive, Zebra, and Spots.

Yes, some of them. Can't name each tetra in the shoal, but my angels have alias names, Stripey and Blacky. The DG is Gary the gourami.

Same for me, I only name personal single fish, like bettas for example. Cannot name every fish in my community, to much to think of.

...kinda.

My crown tail betta is named Skwisgaar.

My ~10 platys? They get description names like, "the sunburst with a moustache" or "the Mickey Mouse that's pregnant again."

I echo the sentiment about fish not being as bonded with people as dogs or cats. If I call a fish over and it drags over a piece of anacharis for me to throw and it to fetch? It's getting a name. Otherwise? They're all "Fishie."
