I have 4 snails, 3 in a 10 gallon shrimp tank and 1 in a 10 gallon betta tank. I had a bit of a mess happening in the shrimp tank with teeny little worms and tons of brown gunk in my sand. So I cleaned it all out really well, like an 80% water change. I cleaned the betta tank too because he's healing from fin rot.
Not 24 hours later I go check the tanks to turn lights on, feed, and observe for casualties (was worried such a large water change would shock the shrimp). About 1/4 of the shrimp tank is covered in snail poop. I have black sand so it really stands out, white turds all over. Every single day I use an airline as a tiny siphon to get the poop out but every day there is a ton more poop. Its becoming my biggest peeve, admiring my tanks but seeing too much snail poop to pat myself on the back :/
I took the snails from my 30 gallon because I felt like they were being out-competed for food, my molly are pigs and eat whatever food I drop in. So I moved the snails to where they'd be allowed to eat without getting nibbled.
I feel like now they are eating too much or something because I don't recall them pooping this much in the 30 gallon. I feed them 1 wafer every 1-2 days. Not 1 a piece, the 3 share 1 wafer and the isolated snail get a broken part of a wafer. Hes isolated because I have all males and he was getting violated by the other 3 constantly, I thought it was stressing him really bad because he had a look on his face, like his antenna wrapped around his eyes and he was always half inside his shell, not very active. Hes happier now tho. And the other 3 all bother each other now and it seems to be fair.
But.... Poop. Way to much. I need a feeding schedule that will result in less poop but still gives my snails the nutrients they need to be healthy. I'm sure my shrimp eat the wafers too so I have to keep them in mind. I also drop a pellet in occasionally for the shrimp but idk if it gets eaten or just disintegrates after so long.
