Mystery Snails Mating but no eggs

I have 2 mystery snails in my 30 gal. A male and a female. I've had them for about 2 week now. They are mating daily, to the point I think the female is trying to hide from the male lol. I check every day for eggs but haven't had any yet. I'm wondering how long it takes to lay eggs after mating? I don't really want hundreds of snails in my tank. But I don't want to just toss the eggs, what can I do??

 

Those are really your two options, unless you want to sell the egg cases. And for me, it was more dozens than hundreds.

 

HI so firstly they might both be males because they do that lol. And yeah there's really not many options for the egg clutches. You can try to sell them but you would end up disposing of some anyway. I have an assassin and I still don't hatch all my clutches.

Well initially I did think they were both boys but after watching them in the act I could see where he. ... inserted himself. .. I've been checking out the inside of the shell every chance I get.

Hopefully I focused well enough that you see what I'm referring to, the opening on the left is the **** sheath? If so then it would explain why there haven't been any eggs yet.

 

The opening on the left is for waste and reproduction. I couldn't really tell male or female from the video. It is fully possible that they are both male. My boys take turns being the man of the relationship.

Ohh ok so females will have the little flap too? the black one is for sure male as I've seen his pee pee. He is so dominate my ivory snail just curls up and hides all day, it is very stressed.

 

Depending on how things are going, you may want to consider splitting them up. I had to do that with mine. Sadly, I didn't do it soon enough to save all of my girls, so it may be something you want to consider. My boys are now in one tank, and my girls in another. It looks like you've got bettas that get along with your snails, so swapping which snails are in which tanks may be something to think about.

 

I took the 2 from the betta tank and added them. If that doesn't help then ill put the black snail in with the betta and the other 3 will stay in my 30.

 

I hope my gold and blue aren't females :/

Since I thought that little flap was a sheath I assumed all 4 snails were male but now I'm wondering if I just added 2 females to the tank lol. Time will tell.

 

Yeah, I usually just base it on if they are trying to mate with the others. Basically you have to try to see up in there to figure out what bits are there, far too much effort and stress on the snails imo.

 

Guys guess what. Ivory was a female all along and finally laid eggs last night

My black, blue, and gold a for sure males. As ive seen their boy parts plenty of times lol. I knew ivory had to be a female because I have never seen her mount the other snails (I see them mount each other all the time tho).

But since she wasn't laying eggs I figures she was defective or something. Until now.

I suppose there's probably still a chance they aren't fertilized because I've had her separated from the males for a few weeks now because they harass her and take turns going for rides. She looked so miserable all the time.

 

Snails can store sperm just like livebearers - one of my females that has been separate from my male for more than a month laid of viable clutch of blue babies.

 

Oh great! Well I'm going to attempt to raise them. I have a 55 gallon that will be perfect for them.
