Mine used to do that and I later came to the conclusion they were eating stuff off each others' shells.

I hope so, don't want babies in this tank or egg clutches. I'll be separating them out of the tank soon.

Looks like mating. I often notice this happening with my mystery snails but have only had 1 egg clutch since I've had them - think its because of the low temperature. If you separate them, the female will still be able to lay fertile eggs if conditions are right but they are easy to remove and you could give them away instead of destroying the eggs.

How long after mating does a female lay eggs?
It varies - I think it can be anything from a few days to a few months. In ideal conditions she might lay eggs sooner. I think it was a couple of months from when I first noticed my snails mating to the first egg clutch. I often notice them mating but have had no egg clutches since and don't think they will lay again until the weather warms up again in spring (our tank is room temperature).

They'll be mating no more! I separated them for good.
