Why are my mystery snails coming out of the water? Do they usually only do this when they are going to lay eggs?

    Good morning,

Mystery Snails do lay their eggs above the water line in the tank. Sometimes they are great escape artists too. If you water parameters are 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites and under 20 Nitrates (under 40 not so bad) and your pH is above 7.0, then I would say what you are seeing is normal.

Ok thanks. Also how long after mating should I expect mystery snail eggs?

Probably a couple of weeks. The females store sperm so she won't lay until she's good and ready. It was almost two months before my female laid her first eggs, and she could have been storing sperm from the pet store for all I know. I've read they can wait 6-9 months before laying, although not all sources agree on this. Higher temperatures and water changes encourage mating in my experience, and laying usually occurs at night.

Ok thanks. I have 4 mystery snails and have seen them mating many times. I believe I may heve 2 females and 2 males. I have probably had them for a bit over a month now and havn't had any eggs yet.

Is your water level lowered? Usually if they come out of the water it's to lay eggs. Make sure they can't get out of the tank and fall and try to keep the water level at least low enough that the biggest snail can be completely out of the water.

My water level is not lowered but they cannot get out either. So far I have 3 egg sacs on the underside of the hood

I do have my water level lowered, about 3 inches space at the top of the tank and a secure lid........
