Mystery Snail Mystery Illness

My mystery snail who arrived as a hitch hiker amongst pest snails isn't well. He seems stuck in his shell behind the 'door' with only one and a bit of his feelers able to get out. I've moved him into a tank with better water quality in case it's that. I don't want to lose him but I'm totally clueless

 

Has it stayed sticking out like that for a long time? Does it smell like death?

He's definitely still alive currently as his feelers are out and waving around still.

 

I wonder if it's just stress you can't force him out so alternative is to put him into his new home and give him 24hr

So my mystery snail improved for a day or so and now I think it's dead. I thought it was just parasnailing (lol) but I just noticed it's trapdoor has come off. Definitely dead? I'd rather not wait for the famous stench
