Mystery snail keeps laying eggs ?

First is there a difference between apple snails and mystery snails? Anyway I have a snail that is said to be a yellow mystery snail - this is my second one (the other one is in another tank). It keeps laying eggs on the lid of the tank (which is just out of hte water). From what I read these are 'sexless' and these eggs will hatch if I leave them be. Do I want them to hatch or will it be a nightmare to end up with a tank of mystery snails? Also bit confused - from a bit of reading I think there is a difference between mystery and apple snails (apple nails from waht I read are suppose to be 'bad') but frequently I see post where people interchange the name between the two which makes me question if they differ.

Mystery snails are a type of apple snails. Keeping the eggs is up to you. Hundreds of snails can hatch from them, but most don’t survive. All apple snails don’t reproduce asexually, so they must have mated in the store tank. If you do decide to keep the eggs, though, try to find people to give a few to.

From what I've read all mystery snails are apple snails

Also I think the reason apple snails are considered bad is because they can get as big as apples.

Mystery snails are a type of apple snail. However, people misname them all the time.

When they say apple snails, they usually are talking about the bigger snail of this type (the Channeled apple snail, or the canaliculata). The channeled apple snail get really large (apple sized or bigger).

The smaller known as mystery snails only grow the to the size of a golf ball. Also, mystery snails won’t eat plants. However, the channeled apple snail will eat them. Mystery also lay dull pinkish grey eggs that turn white. The canas will lay bright pink egg clutches.

Ive had both of these snails, would really NOT recommend the channeled.

Also for both types of these snails, there is a female and male needed to reproduce. They store sperm for years, so most likely you had one that already had previously mated.

Well - i've had this snail for 3 or 4 months. It laid eggs about 2 weeks ago and I threw them away and then it laid them again this week so if it mated it was a long time ago (also when I got it it was pretty small). The other snail I have is about a month older but nearly 1 1/2 times larger (this one is about 1.5 inches large and the other is nearly 2 - this just glancing at it - I suppose if I use a ruler my numbers might be off - but it was large enough to chase my rams away from their nest (so I put it in the guppy tank). The smaller one that is laying eggs is in the small angel tank (3 blacks that are about 2 to 2 1/2 inches large).

These eggs are yellow - not grey or white or pink.

I don’t understand how it could be laying then. When was the last time it was with another mystery? Also are you sure it’s a mystery? I know they can store the “fertilizer” for a few weeks but never heard of them storing it for almost a month.

Never mind, those are defiantly mystery eggs

Yeah you have the smaller of the snails, a mystery snail, not the channeled. The pinkish grayish color I was mentioning was the color of when it’s newly placed. When it’s closer to hatching, it’ll turn full white.

If I move the mystery snail to my loach tank would it be able to hold its own (I have 5 zebra, 7 gold zebra and 5 clowns - but the largest clown is only 5 inches) or would they drive it mad ? Really like those gold zebra - they are like dwarf loaches (very active at all levels of the tank) and extremely bold. my clowns are scary cats - they come out - look for me and then run and hide ('cept when I feed em bloodworms then they wait to grab the worms from me and then hide).

Mystery snails can hold sperm for up to 12months and lay eggs any time she thinks conditions are right. Also if you live in the usa apple snails are classed as evasive and are illegal to keep

Maybe in some states but where I live PetSmart sells them so I think I’m good

I don’t remember the exact species of loach, but I know that a few like to eat snails. Just do a little research before putting the snail into the tank

But this is the confusion I run into - the usage of mystery snail and apple snail in the same sentence as if they are the same. All the pet shops around here sell mystery snails - so I would presume they are not illegal to keep but then again maybe these are not the type that you refer to as apple and illegal.

All of these guys LOVE snails; but the question is would a large snail be too much for them to muck with ? Maybe I should let the eggs hatch and then i'd have lots of extra to experiment with the loaches ? I really don't have room for more than the two snails I have (and they aren't even in the same tank).

Well... I would wait until the eggs hatch if you’re going to hatch them. I think that since the loaches have teeth (correct me if I’m wrong, I only researched the yo-yos and clowns) they eat the shell. If the eggs hatch, and the poached eat the babies, then oh well, the loaches get some good food lol.

Mystery snail are either Male or Female. In the picture, you can see the male golden snail on top of the female white with his reproductive organ inside of her and retracting.
