Mystery Snail eating Amazon Sword?

Just got my first real plant yesterday and today my snail has already chewed three leafs off. Any advice to get the mystery snail to stop? The amazon plant was perfectly green and healthy when I got it and I thought mystery snails only eat dead things?

It sounds like you got an apple snail. They’re related to mystery snails and the two are often mixed up. Apple snails tend to eat plant matter, but I think the mystery snails only eat the plants when they’re starving.

Thanks for the information! Is there any type of plant it doesn't like? I would like to get a plant to lower nitrates but I love my snail and couldn't rehome him.

I’ve heard Java ferns don’t taste that good to goldfish. I’m not sure if that’s the same with Apple snails but if you were to drop in algae wafers and veggies I think the snail should avoid the Java ferns. They are pretty slow growers but I would just start with one. We don’t want the snail to eat them all!

Mystery snails don't eat sword plants; but it will eat algae off of sword plants. If you got an apple snail you want to get rid of it. And I don't mean toss it - i mean find a loach to eat it.

Why get rid of it? My snail gets along with all of my fish. I only have one so they won't breed also.

Maybe if you feed your snail really well it will leave your plants alone. I've never had an apple snail but from all I've read they have a BIG appetite. It seems they will eat plants if they get hungry. Feed it fresh veggies, algae wafers and various leaves. It seems mulberry and dandelion leaves are favorites but there are many other leaves that are safe to feed our water pets.

Thanks, I am going to try it. Right now it eats the brown algae in my tank along with bottom feeder tablets. Should I feed algae tablets even if I have algae in my tank?

You don't want to release it as they are a pest in most places and they get HUGE. Typically they prefer plant matter to algae....

I have an apple snail and no matter how well I feed him he still munches on my plants.
If you want to have a planted tank, rehome him.

Reading the replies from folks that have apple snails it seems they will eat your plants no matter how much you feed the little/soon to be big guy. Since folks say they prefer plants, the leaves and fresh veggies might be better than algae wafers. Hopefully along with the food you offer the snail it will also keep your tank free of algae.

Thanks for all the information guys! Sounds like I wont be getting any more plants. Right now the snail is about an inch and a half in diameter so I thought he is almost full grown. I hope he does not get too much bigger becuase he is actually apple

He will probably grow another inch, inch and a half maybe. Apple snails can get to like 4-5 inches tops if kept in the right conditions.

Another inch would be okay. He's just been growing like crazy since I got him around a month ago.
