Mystery Snail Baby Journal

I've only been in the aquarium hobby for a few months but I have a new special love for snails I wanted to keep track of and share the development of my little cuties on here. (I couldn't figure out if I could add photos to blog posts, so I'm posting here instead heh heh)

The larger snails I currently have are a light purple striped, dark purple striped (both courtesy of Ryan1824), a golden, ivory, black striped?, and a blue female.

The first egg clutch was laid on June 29th by my blue, named Azula, and started hatching July 15th. I've counted 32 babies so far. There have been a few other clutches laid in between that time and one even laid the other day. She just keeps going at it haha I'm assuming she mated while at the store so the father is unknown. Here are photos of her and the first eggs

As of July 21st the babies are looking much darker and have grown significantly even though they are still incredibly small. They are in a 2.5 gallon until they get larger and I can move them into my 10 or 20 gallon and hopefully some into the loving homes of fellow aquarists

Omg that's hilarious After some research I'm assuming this is a Lord of the Rings reference? It's really silly even without knowing though! I surprisingly find other inhabitants riding the snails quite often haha my african dwarf frog was actually straddling one last night!! It was so perfect but too dark to get a picture!

I don't mind if you use the picture at all if anyone else around the Internet shows interest though it would be nice to send em my way lol I love sharing my photos! They're all taken on my phone camera, nothing super special. My model is a Samsung Galaxy S6.

More babies! The clutch that was laid on July 15th just hatched this morning (July 26th). There were many more this time and they hatched faster than the first one! I now have somewhere around 100+ baby snails!

I was honestly expecting a higher mortality rate for my house being so cold even in this heat and it being my first attempt. I'm sort of overwhelmed now. I disposed of the other clutches because I don't think I can handle more at the moment. I suppose I should try to contact my local tropical fish store and see if they'd be interested in taking some of them. I really should have asked them before they hatched but it feels so weird to be like "hey I have this thing for you that you won't get for another couple months". Does anyone have advice for selling/donating snails?

I really do like them and would love to cover my tanks in them but I feel like I only have room for 10 more at the most and don't have the household permission to expand my little aquarium collection.

This is the biggest one. It's like twice the size of the small ones. Do snails emit that growth reduction hormone stuff? I've seen it mentioned before in raising certain fry.

If I may ask(if this question is not allowed, all apologies, I just joined today) what hatching method did you use?

They're soooo tiny (and absolutely adorable). They're also getting really dark. Parents were dark I'm guessing?
NeriteXMystery welcome to the forum! <3 more snail people!

NeriteXMystery I didn't do anything super high tech. I took the clutch off of the tank wall and set it up in a little hatchery I made from plastic containers. These are small (6 oz I think) food containers that have never been used. I put some tank water in one, punched holes in the lid, attached those, placed the clutch on the holy lid, and then covered it with another container secured with tape. I eventually was not satisfied with the amount of humidity created with just holes so I cut a section from the lid out and cut a piece of plastic craft mesh to fit and put some wet sponge pieces in there too. Hope this answers your question

Bithimala I'm assuming they were ^^ I know for sure the mom is blue, so dark foot and light shell, but I have no idea who the dad is. I'm also very happy about their colors coming in! I hope they stay this dark

Thanks Bithimala for the welcome. Taffymieh, I used the same method, I learnt off of youtube and my two clutches are looking quiet well. I would post a pic if I knew how to, lol.

August 9th and they have grown so much! This is just the largest one though. Some of the others are still very tiny. I've counted approximately 65 today.

August 13th. I found another clutch, but on the glass this time, as opposed to the ones I've been finding on the hood. I'm suspecting a different snail. The gold and brown striped ones were both taking a serious nap this morning, a habit I noticed in the original blue mama after she laid a clutch. I saved half of it and am eagerly awaiting to see if they turn out a different color and will be watching out at night to see which one comes out to lay more

August 23rd The clutch hatched with many more babies than I was expecting once again. The piece I saved was about the quarter of the size of the first 2 clutches that hatched and only produced 30-70 snails. But 60+ crawled out if this one! I'm thinking the higher yield has to do with the weather. My room has been much warmer during the day now that we're having 100'F heat. I noticed they all had a green spot freshly after hatching but later that night, I didn't notice it anymore. It's hard to tell, but they have a little green in the second photo. Do you think this means they'll be a different color?

Some of the snails are ready to be sold! Some of them went to my local aquarium store, and others are growing quite slowly, so I can't offer hundreds at the moment but they are on their way ^^ If you are interested, please check out the post here
