Mystery of the disappearing guppies

So my roommate and I recently got a 2 gallon tank, and I got it all set up for us (a java fern and anubias are in the tank, along with small filter, and a small heater). We got two fairly small male guppies from Petco, and mine died the day after we got it so I assumed it was from the stress of moving and all that. But then my roommate's fish started showing signs of fin and tail rot infection (frayed tail), and before I could do anything about it he DISAPPEARED. Literally cannot find him anywhere (when mine died, he was just sitting at the bottom of the tank, dead. This is different). I've checked the filter, all around inside the tank, all around outside of the tank. I cannot figure out what happened to this poor guy, though I can only assume he died from the infection. This was about a week ago. A few days ago, my new guppy that I got a few days after my original guy died, started showing signs of fin and tail rot too. This time I put in some aquarium salt, as I've read that can help with such infections. Welp, he was here an hour ago, and now he too has DISAPPEARED.
Can anyone tell me what the heck is happening?! I'm no aquarium keeping novice, but I've never seen this before. Are they like burrowing into the sand to die or something? Are they disintegrating immediately after dying? What is going ON?!
Thanks for anyone who responds to this, it's a doozy.

Is there a decoration he could be stuck in? Perhaps a tunnel or something else that has a small hole.

Can you post a picture of your tank?

Was the 2 gallon cycled? They probably died from ammonia/ nirates if the tank wasn't cycled.

2 gallons is NOT enough space for even ONE guppy. Guppies need more swim room, and guppies actually produce more waste for their size.

Even a betta is not suited for a 2 gallon tank. The guppies could have also died from some disease from the fish store. If you want more guppies (not in the 2 gallon tank) try buying from a different store.

Sorry for the death of your guppies!

No decorations in the tank besides the two plants I mentioned-
I'll try to get a picture up soon!
You know, I used that "API Quick start" which said that it would cycle the tank immediately by introducing the bacteria needed to break down the waste and all that, so I assumed that it was good, but perhaps not?
FeederGuppies, what would you suggest putting in it then? We're so limited on space, being in a dorm room and all, and also being college students, we can't afford to get anything bigger (space wise, and money wise).

is there anywhere they could be jumping out. I had a female jump out and I found who knows how long and when I picked it up it was dry ( I assumed it was dead) but then it just barely moved and It is still swimming in the tank today.

Could they have been sucked up into the filter? As others have said a gal tank is too small even for little fish.

Looks like you have a sturdy cabinet I'd recommend a 10G, or a 20L while petco has their $1 per gallon sale.

Would RCS work for a 2 gallon? I'm pretty sure they can, if the tank is cycled. I don't know what else can fit in a 2 gallon, lol.

If you got a 4 or 5 gallon you could get a betta. They are very personable fish.

Shrimp and snails would both be fine in a cycled 2 gallon, preferably planted.

Yeah I had a 2.5g with guppies. Had 2 lost one to ammonia and other to parasites. Last one was favorite fish I owned. He had the personality of a Betta. Long story short I would not reccomend guppies in a 2.5g. However a Betta (if cycled and heated) would be the only fish you can get away with. People will disagree with me, but you can.

Shrimp might not be a flashy Betta or male Fancy Guppy but they definitely aren't a boring sub for a fish, they do some pretty funny things like hoard food from each other and climb all over plants and deco. I've even heard of them swimming upside down on the surface of the water to eat food up there but I've never seen it.

I would say the minimum for bettas is a 3 gallon. The OP only has a 2 gallon. Bettas that live in 2 gallons will definitely live a shorter life. That's why I recommend a 4 or 5 gallon.

RCS are very fun to own! I have 3, and they are very active, sometimes they are more fun to watch then my guppies! I only have 3, so if you have more, that would be an interesting tank.

RCS can't stand uncycled tanks though, so you would have to do a fishless cycle.

I had this same thing happen with amano shrimp in a fluval edge. My tank was completely covered with a prefilter sponge over the intake of the filter. Never found my shrimp. (Aliens)

Did you decide what to do with your tank?

Sometimes when guppies are dying they bury themselves under things, my guppie died and we found burried underneath a rock

Are you sure they didn't get stuck and die?
