Mystery Fungus?

Hello, I am just getting back into the hobby after about 10 years, and I have just set up a 30g corner tank. It's been running for about 2 weeks, no fish, and I used a bit of food to start the nitrogen cycle. There's a large piece of driftwood and a rock that was labeled petrified wood at the LFS, and there is some white, fuzzy stuff growing on just the rock. It doesn't look like any fungus I've seen before. Has anybody else had this (picture attached)?
    Thanks!

Is it soft to the touch? Looks almost crystalline.

It seemed almost brittle when I pulled the rock out and scrubbed it with a toothbrush. It fell off the rock on the way out, came off super easily with the toothbrush. I poured boiled water over the rock (too big for the pot) and it seemed to keep it away for a day or two, but now it's back.
