Mysterious growth on 15+ year old driftwood

I suddenly have these weird growths on my malaysian driftwood in my planted tank. I've had them in there for 15 plus years now and they are suddenly growing these fuzzy, worm-like threads. Nothing new has been introduced for well over a year, and I don't feed any live foods. I found an old thread where someone else had the same issue and posted this photo (see below), but the thread is closed so I can no longer comment. How can I get rid of it? It seems to be growing very aggressively and is overtaking my aunbias and java ferns that are also growing on the driftwood.

Just an educated guess. Based on the purple red color of the growth, maybe Cyanobacteria gone wild.
