My Temps Wont Go Down!

Hello, I have a 29 gallon tank that stays at 80 degrees pretty much no matter what. I turn the lights off, the heater has been off for weeks and I keep my house around 74 degrees all day and night. Is this normal? The only equipment I have running are the canister filters. I know I can bring the temps down by using ice, but I am puzzled by why the temps just won't go down. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

My 75 gallon floats to 82 degrees. I don't worry about it. Fish are fine.

Did you unplug the heater? If it's malfunctioning, it may not turn down or even off OR your thermometer may be 'stuck' or broken OR you've got direct sunlight hitting it part of the day. Without a heat source in an above ground tank, it can't remain 6 degrees hotter than the ambient temperature around it.

One other thought, you'r canister may be malfunctioning causing the water to heat up. I'd be checking all possibilities. Could indicate a big problem...

Agree! That's why I'm like ****. Yes the heater is unplugged completely. I do have sunlight coming in the room during the day. Its not hitting the tank directly though. My tank is about 20ft away from the window. It must be that

No that's not normal at all. It doesn't even make sense lol.

Are you sure the thermometer isn't broken? It's possible you're getting an incorrect reading. That or it gets really hot in your house during the day when you're not there?

I've never heard of a canister filter heating up tank water, although I suppose it's possible if it overheats....

I thought it might be my canisters. They have been pretty reliable, hopefully it's not that. I'll keep the shades closed all day tomorrow and see what happens. I really have no reason to keep it open during the day, other than for a crested gecko that I keep in my room. I don't want her to be in the dark all the time, they are nocturnal so I like to keep her on a normal cycle.

Lighting? Lights can run hot.. they can heat the water which can take a while to cool off again.. longer than the lights or room.

Good point, yes I have a couple reliable thermometers, not just the cheap digital ones. Although, for being cheap, they are on point lol. I dropped it down to 77 by floating ice bags pretty quick. Lets see what happens after tomorrow. My AC is on 24/7 at 74 degrees, I live in Miami. Hot during the day is more like death

I have a small led light that sits like 8" away and I've been running it very little, it never really raised the temp more than half a degree after being on for several hours

Unplug one canister at a time for 12 hours. It will rule them out and not cause a problem with your bacteria.

This. Although I've not had a canister personally do this I know one person who canister set fire and another whose canister was malfunctioning due to what I don't remember now but he found it only because of his tank running overly warm suddenly and consistently and eventually narrowed it down to the canisters by a process of elimination.

I was gonna guess your filters as well. That's the last thing that makes any sense. You have air circulation in your house with the AC so its not as if the heat is getting trapped (like in a car). Strange.

I'll check the canisters for sure, I have a Eheim 2217 and Eheim 2213 if it matters. Thanks again!

Well if it is the canister, which is unlikely, you can feel them and see if the motor housing is hot.

Well you only have so many places heat can come from. Lights, heaters or filters. Isn't much else.

I’m with touch the motor. If it’s hot that’s your problem. Or if one is hotter than the other shut it off and see if the temp goes down. Why the 2 filters? Either one of those would be enough. Also an hob with the water falling into the tank will also lower the temp.

I don't think it's the filter because they aren't warm/hot. I have 2 filters because I have a turtle and really because I have the extra filter so why not use it I prefer to have suction in different areas of my tank, but yes, you are absolutely right, I can get by with 1 of these for certain. Thanks!
