10 Gallon Tank My son's 10 Gallon Starter Tank

Hello,

I recently got a tank for my son for Christmas and found this site when I was looking at "hot rodding" the HOB filter.

I will be upgrading to a 50 gallon I had leftover from leopard geckos that I will be converting around April/May. This 10 gallon will become a betta tank most likely after.

- First picture is from the initial setup.

- Second is after I learned that sand is better for the corys and I added a layer over the gravel after I took some out. I immediately noticed a change in their behavior digging in the sand.

- Third is after I replaced the fake plants with new ones, got a rock for inside as well.

I have a glass canopy and new light fixture to set up as well when I do my filter 'hotrod" later today.
Will probably see if any reorganization will be needed after I position the filter on the left side of the new cover.

What are you planning for your filter hot rod?

These are what I purchased from before to do it.

These are after pics. The old bio media sponge is still in there on the left side at bottom while I replaced it with the new sponge. And the fabric I cut up from the old filter is in between the sponge and the Matrix pouch.

Just some updates.
Ended up finding the stand I wanted and made some small rearranging when doing the tank move.

Also set up my glass top as well.

Went on vacation, came back did a cleaning, took some photos. Nothing really new, until my basement renovations are done by spring. Then can start on the larger tank upgrade.

He loves it, always pulls his chair up to feed them and watch. Also, he likes to use the magnetic algae scrubber on the glass so I have a helper now for cleaning!

Just posting an updated picture of the tank, no real big upgrades other than an airstone in the corner now.

I also got this recently.

Trying to figure out now how I want to aquascape this and transfer the fish to this tank after. The original 10 gallon will probably become a Betta tank after with shrimps.

Hey, I just got this from Amazon to try out and add to the tank.
Any tips on adding an airstone to this filter?
I have extra stones and hoses.

Hi Warriah
Those sponge filters with the plastic tube running down the middle will need a little modification before you can use an air stone.

If you do cut the tube out completely there is no going back.

Air line comes in a few different diameters. The larger 3.5 mm will slide on to the inside of the fitting that would have clipped on to the tube that is to be cut away. Most air line sizes will push on with effort.

You then cut a couple of inches off the hose so that it hangs down with the air stone hanging at the very bottom.
Edit
Actually one of those small filters will only have about one inch of air line inside .

Thanks! I will try later tonight and see how it goes. I don't mind cutting the inside tube out, I wasn't expecting to return it anyways at the price I got it for lol

Be careful with upgrading the tank to 50 gal, as some terrariums are not suited to hold water (Unless it was purchased as a fish tank). I love the progress though and it is a beautiful tank!

Yeah that 50 gal I'm not even going to attempt anymore. Got a 20 gal rimless I will be using. Just figuring out how to aquascape it is the hard part, a lot of options and styles to go with.

Nice,I hope the best for you! I had a terraium full of bog plants in a old repti cage and idk if it was just old and the silicon seal was pealing or if it wasnt made for it but that thing leaked everywhere

Got around to adding the airstone. Turns out with some trimming of pieces the stone fits flush in the middle piece. The cap snaps directly onto the stone as well. Pretty easy job.
