My Quarantine System Setup

Hey guys,

Have been trying so hard to get this stuff going, finally found the time.

I built 2 x 15 Gallon tanks for use as a qt tanks. They have black silicon, which i'm so glad I used, 'coz it looks great, and is sprayed black on two sides to give the fish a better sense of security. These won't be running full time but over the next 8 - 10 months will definetely do so. These tanks will allow me to hold more fish at a time and also, because I have more than 5 tanks running now, will need it in a tight situation.

My plan is to keep them running for about a year because they will almost always serve as acclimation for fish coming in for my 110 Gallon community.

Filters are simple sponge filters that are quite big so that more bacteria can colonize the sponge, and water is changed twice a week (30 - 50%). They are also barebottom setups. Decor includes soft silk plants I could get, and terracotta pot-plants. Each have a 50W heater as well as the airpump powering the filters is both outlet and battery powered.

I moved my new malawi's into one today, and it's much better being able to inspect the fish clearly, compared to the slightly opaque tub I was using before this.

Quarantine time is IMO the most important time for fish. Once past this stage, you are almost assured success.

When I built them I was a bit limited on size, so I made them wider and slightly deeper. They are the same length as a regular 10g. So it doesn't eat space

That is a mad business though. Completely amazing but completely specialised. I bet he's the only guy at that level of discus keeping in the world.

Thanks. I build all my smaller ones. I have no business dealing with bigger ones anymore. I've built a 6 foot 180gallon before but it was just a nightmare.

If you'd like to know how I do it though then YOU pm ME! ;D

Those look great!!

Thanks.

Those are some good looking QT tanks. You made them yourself? I always wondered how hard it is to make your own tank. I assume you just get the glass cut and use silicone to hold of course. How do you make them perfectly square like that though? Also, nice touch on the black silicone and backs. Black is my favorite color so needless to say I love the black silicone which is on my 75 and I use a solid black background. You wouldn't happen to have a step by step outline of how you go about building your tanks do you?

Seems a few people are asking for something like that.

I will admit I have a pretty intense workshop with all the tolls I'll ever need, but even with basic tool, any tanks that are 29 gallon and smaller are generally quite easy. Like I said I have done bigger ones but they're a real mission. One mistake with the silicon then you have a huge mess to deal with. for DIY tanks, larger ones are easier to make yourself using plywood, and that's something that isn't as rare as it used to be and many people are doing it nowadays.

As for getting them square, the smaller tanks I just used wooden blocks that I know are perfectly square and some t-squares. I've found it's easier to do the tank one panel at a time compared to the 2 at a time most guides recommend.

I agree with the black. The silicon is only slightly more expensive, but IMO it's easier to notice an air bubble when working with it. That and it looks great ;D As for the backgrounds, all 8 tanks of mine are sprayed black at the back and a couple on the sides. It really does create a great place to watch fish interact.

I would not say he is the only guy, Hans comes to mind, there are many top notch ones out there, But Kenny is known for his Quality and service, that is for sure.

I'm not familiar with the names out there I am sure though that there can't be too many.

Thanks for the compliments

Have not actually seen a tank built with black silicone. IMO if the edges are not clean it would not look good only when it has clean edges would it really look cool and neat.
