My Pump Is Squirting Bubbles - No Constant Flow

HI there!

I just started up a small 54L aquarium and just put in the filter/pump. This pump is fully submerged and on top on the water outlet I have connected an air tube. This air tube can be regulated to either hig or low amount of air coming in.

As soon as it is running it keeps spitting out bubbles around two times a second, and there isn't a constant flow of air bubbles. The size of the bubbles are jsut fine, it's just the fow isn't working. I have a MARINA Jet-80 system.

Because of the "squirting" it makes a noice that I don't want in my living room.

I have tried the following:

1. See if the "impeller" is faulty. But since it's brand new and looks fine I don't think it's that.
2. Tried to lower the whole pump and put it higher, same result.
3. Put the air intake tube higher and lower, aswell as trying to regulate the amount of air coming in. Same result.
4. Made sure that the pump has enough water around it, I mean there is nothin obstructing the water from coming into the pump.
5. It's been runnin whole night, because I thought there might trappad air in the coal filter inside it. But now I know it's completele soaked.
6. I removed one plastic seperator inbetween the one spounge filter and the coal filter, because I was thinking it was obstructing the waterflow from coming out. Same thing.

Maybe it's working as intended, but in such case I will return it for a more quiet one. I have attached a picture. It's a bit hard to see what's going on but I hope my explanation works for you. Do you think it's working as it should? Any ideas of how to get a constant fine flow from it? Oh and there is no kind of regulater on the pump itself to increase or decrease the waterflow.

Thak you for the help!

Best regards,

Jonas Bergkvist

I may be misunderstanding what you are trying to do, but why do you have an airtube on your intake? If it is a submergible power head, it should be intaking water, not air...I hope this helps

Thanks for your reply Kirky. I think I wrote wrong Sorry about that. So I have the airtube connected to the nozzle where the water is coming out. The ideas is that it pushes the water out, dragging with it air - creating small bubbles. But in this case it just randomly pushes out bubbles. I can see that when it pushes the water out the air tube gets filled with a very little amount of water. Not sure if that's right. I have attached a picture in my previous post and a picture from the manual. I have set it up as in figure three.

Is water backing up into your airline (I think that's what you are saying?) Try attaching an airstone to your airline and see if the same thing happens, it sounds like you need a bit strong airflow.

HI - I understand your problem, which can be caused by either of two things:
  1. You don't have a constant flow of water coming out of your filter - raise the outlet nozzle above the water level and observe the flow of water. The flow should be regular and consistent. If it isn't, then something is either blocking the flow of water entering the filter or the impeller is broken. To check where the problem is being initiated, just take the filter media out and leave the filter pump in the water pumping water without any load.
  2. Your air pipe is blocked is soft and closing (clinching) itself. This may also happen if there is a sharp bend in the pipe. To resolve this problem you will need to straighten the pipe out or replace it. Test it without the air regulator removed or set to max.
Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for your replies. I tried to bring the pump with filter above the waterline, and I think the impeller worked just fine. There was a constant waterflow from it. Also submerged. Then I tried to remove the filter part and did the same. I tested with and without the air pipe - and max and minumum air flow. I also checked if the pipe was clinging or if it was blocked. Same result as before - hmmm. You know, i'm thinking of just disconnecting the air-pipe and let it just pump water and buy a separate air pump. They are not to expensive after all. I feel like i'm giving up a bit here...

don't give up.......it is really convenient to have a source of bubbles without additional equipment.....if you need the bubbles.

What happens if you disconnect the air pipe completely and just leave the nozzle on the filter sticking out above the water?
