My Parrot Is Able To Close Its Mouth?

Is this normal? She looks exactly like other BPs but she can completely (I mean completely) close her mouth. I have another BP that can move its mouth and almost close it but not quite. I looked into King Kong Parrot cichlids but I'm not convinced she is one. She honestly looks exactly like a BP shape wise, just the mouth is different.

And don't get me wrong, this makes me actually really happy. I just didn't think any of them could.

If it can bite properly it may be able to do more damage to other fish. They are aggressive so I would monitor things.

 

Some BP have fully functioning mouths, there is one at my local petco that has a fully functioning mouth. This is not a good thing if you wish to house them with other cichlids unless they aren't as aggressive as most of the breed acts (most are highly aggressive). Most do not have a fully functioning mouth, which is what you find most often.
If it is not causing any harm there is no reason to worry.

 

Some can close their mouth and bite - even you. There are tons of YouTube movies of parrot fish biting hands.
I got bitten by one at work when I wanted to remove a dead danio. Luckily that one couldn't close it's mouth.

 

Hmm. Well I've had her for a couple of months and she seems fine. She even laid eggs a few weeks ago. She's protective of her turf but otherwise seems fine and doesn't flat out attack any of my other fish. I'll have to post photos later as I don't have any of her mouth closed. Normally her mouth is open and she looks like a regular BP but on occasion she closes it.

 

There is a lot of variation in BRPCs. I have 4 that close their mouths. One that is runty and looks like a more like a red devil.

 

Mine can close her mouth too. She can bite other fish - and did! Beat one up pretty badly. Had to get rid of him. Not all blood parrots have mouths that won't close.
