My Ozelot Sword seems happy

It's difficult to tell from the picture, but it's in the back half of the 20 gallon long on the filing cabinet at the end of my desk.

I measured the flowering stem the best I could and it's about 27" [almost 700 mm] long.

I get runners every other week but no flowers

Now to train it to stop making runners. The problem is i can cut the ones off i see but it has learned to send them into the java farm and i don't see them until a giant sword pokes out through the farm - and i don't need another giant sword plant That's right the 'new' swords are already growing 16 inches high by the time i see them.

How do i get them to flower instead of sending out runners ?

. . . How do i get them to flower instead of sending out runners ?

I have no idea, but if it helps this runner has been here for a week or longer, and just has flowers this morning. Maybe you've been giving up on them too soon?

It's still blooming, and I noticed yesterday that it's shooting up a second stalk.

By the way, some of the nodes on the first stalk have leaves in addition to the flower buds, but I don't see any roots. When the blooms are all done should I plant those? I'd assume yes, but I don't see any roots, just flower buds and leaves.

I would wait until they form a couple of roots first. Best to let them get a head start.

Thank you. Have you had this happen in your tanks?

Just a few times.

I agree just be patient. They will form very long roots eventually. Also the new plants grow faster while attached to the parent. My sword never flowers but as i noted above it sends out these pesty runners - i swear after a month the new swords are about 4x bigger than what you typically buy in the store. Quite annoying wish it would stop.

Thank you both for replying. Do the roots typically develop after the leaves and flower buds?

My swords don't flower; the leaves developed first and the roots will develop much later.

I have never ceased to be amazed at the root structure that swords send out. Wait until you try to unearth one of these things. LOL They are great centerpiece plants.

Those roots are crazy. They always cover almost the entire bottom of the tank.

All 3 of the nodes on the original stalk now have leaves and at least one root. I bent it so I could get all of them in the water.

The second stalk has 5 nodes that have been blooming, so I expect they'll sprout leaves and roots later.

Bud - don't encourage it - soon you will have more swords than you know what to do with - they will first over-run your tank - then they will over-run your home and finally they will over-run the neighborhood. Heed my advice snip them before they snip you.

Your lucky. I have one in a dirted tank with Co2 and liquid ferts and it’s not grown a single bit in over month

That is odd - very odd. Perhaps need more (stronger?) light ?

I already have a home for at least one, and probably two. I'll be surprised if I can't sell the rest.

It might just need more time, or as jake37 suggested it might not be getting enough light. What kind of light do you have, and how tall is your tank?

Mine is in a 20 long, with an inexpensive BeamsWork light. It gets dosed with Easy Green twice a week, and I stuck a couple root tabs in the soil around it a few weeks ago. I don't do root tabs on any set schedule.

A 20 long is a shallow tank - not sure - could be a problem with the spectrum. You could try the hygger light (around $45-$50) or just give the sword time. It could also be a deficiency in a specific nutrient.

I tried to post pictures, but my phone is acting up. Anyway, it's sending up a third shoot now, and I have 3 small plants with nice roots ready to cut off of the parent on the original shoot.

I should have a few soon. I'll try to remember to reach out to you, but if I forget keep an eye on https://www.fishlore.com/aquariumfishforum/threads/assorted-plants-for-sale.472435/. I plan to list them there when I have enough to bother with.

Kathylee I owe you an apology. This completely slipped my mind. I did harvest some plants from the runners, but I didn't list them because I finally found a LFS that will pay cash so I've been taking pretty much everything there. I do have a few that I haven't delivered yet that I could ship if you're interested. If not I plan to make a trip to that store Friday and I'll take them then.

By the way, the plant is sending up a 4th shoot. Each of the previous three had more nodes than the one before (4, then 5, then 7), so I'm curious how many this one will have. I put two of the root tabs from NilocG under it a few days ago.

I noticed the fifth shoot a few days ago. It's amazing how fast those grow.

Kathylee, did you still want some? I have four left from the last batch. It's okay if you don't, I'm sure my LFS will take them.
