I finally convinced my sister to let me have the baby betta she purchased on a whI'm a few months ago!
She didn't do any research prior to getting it, and then upon bringing it home decided it was better to listen to the advice of LPS employees rather than her fish-geek of a sister. This poor fish ended up in a tiny vase with no filter or heater (or really anything).
Around the time this was going on I was rescuing two bettas that were kept in a little divided 2.5 gallon. I ended up upgrading them to a 10 gallon, so I gave the 2.5 to my sister. I even made her a nice little sponge filter
Well today (months later) when I saw the aquarium, I noticed that it looked really dirty. I asked her when the last time she cleaned the tank was, and of course she said she had never cleaned it. I told her I'd be happy to take the betta off her hands and get the tank all cleaned up; apparently she was sick of taking care of it anyways, so she handed him over.
Before getting him all set up I thought I'd test the water- .25ppm ammonia, 0 nitrite, 20-30 nitrate. At least the filter was working
I'm having trouble adding photos- I'll try again in another post Betta's getting all settled in and is definitely enjoying his clean water!
PS- did I mention the reason my sister got the betta in the first place? She was shopping with a friend and they decided they would both get bettas and see whose lived the longest. *facepalm*
