My new fish! Good and bad.... help!

So I brought 8 of the 10 mysterious guppies to the LFS and they took them (thank goodness! They told me all 8 were female and 5 were very close to labor!)

So today I bought a really pretty white balloon molly and I listened to everyone and went to look at the dwarf gouramis. They were gorgeous! I fell in love and bought the best looking neon blue and orange striped one. ;D SO Happy!

So now I have 2 balloon mollies - an orange one (pinto) and a white one - no name yet.
1 adult female guppy and 1 baby (about 1 cm) named Big Lou (I think)
1 gourami

and now my tank is essentially done! I want to buy an oto but we'll see. No one seems to have them when I go!

I have Big Lou in a breeding net even though he has been fine without it his whole life - I didn't want to risk his life when I added the new fish. I'll let him out in a few days. I'll post pictures once the ugly net is out!

I am so happy! What a pretty fishtank! Now I just need some names....

Re: My new fish! Good and bad....

Eek!! Before when I had two balloon mollies... I had two males. I'm pretty sure the new white one is a female and pinto is harassing her so much!
I have a breeding net set up for the baby (and it's really big for my 10 gal tank).
I have a breeding box someone gave me but it doesn't have a clip or anything. I have it now sitting on top of my castle lol and I put Pinto in there for a time out. I hope this works. I don't want the new molly to stress out and die! I know that Pinto is harassing her, but I can't tell if she likes it. She doesn't seem to run away (most of the time)... I caught her hiding behind the breeding net to get away from him.

He really hates this box! he really looks aggitated.... Any suggestions? Do I risk stressing him out to save her? Or do I let him out and have him harass her? lol

... the gourami is beautiful in this tank!

Usually when there is only one female in the tank with a male he will harrasse her. Livebearers do better in trios of one make and two females so the lovin' can be spread around. You could add another female and see if that helps.
Do you have any plants? That would give her a more natural way to hide from him and they will both stressed less. Live or artificial plants would work. Hope that helps

Thank you SO much!

I feel like I know the answers, I just need reinforcement! lol

There are 6 fake plants and a big colluseum for her to hide. I think you're right, I think I'll add another female. lol Sheesh!

Thanks!

yea, if a spanking and a time-out doesn't do the trick, he needs another female. i've seen the same thing in other livebearers, where one gets picked on but doesn't try to hide. almost like they've accepted their place in the pecking order or something.

Okay. So I put him in time out and he escaped! So I put him back in and made sure he couldn't escape. I released him after like an hour and finally I went out and bought another female balloon molly.

They look so good together! Pinto is the male - he's orange. Lilly is all white and the last one I bought is all black. I need a good name for her.

So total fish bought today.... 3!

lol no, no websnout yet!

I named the white one Lilly for obvious reasons. Then my mother pointed out that Lilly was the wife's name from The Munsters... and since I was looking for a black-color name and she said I should name her Morticia, the wife from The Addams Family.

I'm considering it... lol

haha I should have done Ebony and Ivory... but I'm already stuck on Lilly!

I also want a cool name for my gourami. I'm thinking something kind of odd and snuffy... Nigel or something like that.
And I've been calling my baby guppy Big Lou. haha

Sounds like your tank is very vibrant! I actually had kind of a bad experience with my balloon mollies...A while back I purchased three white balloon mollies because I read that if you buy three, then a "weaker" one wouldn't get picked on. They all looked great, all the same size, etc. A few weeks later, one balloon molly died, no rhyme or reason, no tell tale signs, no fin nipping, no bullying...it just happened. Then a few days later my second balloon molly died as well; but this time I knew exactly what killed it. Because he was soooo bloody fat ( that's why I like them by the way) he wedged himself between a decoration and the side of the glass tank - he was stuck, and just died of stress because he couldn't get out, so I guess the tip of the day, is to make sure there are no places that you can see where that balloon molly could get stuck. My third one, affectionately named lucky is beautiful to this day, and is about one year old. My molly is actually in love with one of my platy's as he constantly swims with her all the time!

Yeah, I really love them because of their weird shape! I think it's what makes them so unique! When I first bought Pinto, I bought a black and white speckled one. He was realllllllllllllly stupid. Had bad depth perception, would swim into things, wasn't a great swimmer. But he was awesome! My favorite... because he was so stupid I named him "Einstein" and every time he would swim, I could only think he was hearing his own theme song "Do-do dooo... do-do dooo" as he swam along.
Then he died of what I thought was ammonia poisoning. I don't know, it was my only guess. :-( Awww I miss Einstein!!

It's really cute...

The one guppy I kept (not the baby) has been FREAKING OUT since all the new additions. She seriously hides 24/7 behind the birthing net.. so knowing that she lived with Big Lou the baby and didn't eat him, I took the chance and put her in with him to try and make her feel safe for a few days. A day later, she escaped back into the tank (not really sure how) so I left her out. She has been staying in the corners far away from everyone... but I noticed today that she is starting to hang with the 3 balloon mollies, like she's part of the gang!
