Yes, but unfortunately I got the tank set up before I got the sand, and wanted to get started on the cycle right away. I'm going to try to put it in as gently as possible though...

wow....good luck with that!!!

I'd love to see you trying to do that! I'm sure it'll look great when it's done, but it'll be messy!

Yeah.... I'm gonna turn off the filter and remove the bubble wall for a bit when I put that in lol

wow....good luck with that!!!

Thanks lol

Ok, so...
my ammonia readings are dropping back down to almost 0 in one day, but nitrites are holding at 1.0ppm. I hope it drops soon, I want my Kiwi! lol

Today readings were:
Ammonia: about 0 (prior to adding more ammonia)
Nitrite: 1.0
This is the third day in a row it's been at 1. I think I'll do a small PWC and see if that helps. I know I have nitrate readings, so I haven't been bothering with testing that.

Readings are still 0 ammonia 1 nitrite.

But I got the sand in! Check it out, doesn't it look great?

So when I woke up this morning the water was completely clear. So to all of you who thought it was gonna be awful. It was only cloudy a few hours! ;D lol
I'm doing another waterchange today... I think I added too much ammonia yesterday...

So, my ammonia is dropping fast again.
I did a 20 gallon water change yesterday. Today the readings are: 0/1/80. And that's after a 20 gallon waterchange. Yeah. So I'm thinking it's pretty much cycled, but I just added too much ammonia that made the nitrites go crazy.

lol, wow, yeah that's kind of intense....how much did you add?

When are you adding the fishies?

I talked to the person who has Kiwi, she said she ordered heat packs, and when they get here in the next few days then she'll ship KiwI to me. My plan is to put KiwI in about an hour before Garth and StachI cause she's a bit smaller, but I don't know if I'll be able to wait that long lol

So my tank is completely decorated, and I just did a 50 gallon water change. *wipes brow*
That's 10 five gallon buckets back and forth. I'm going to test the water again in an hour or so to see if the levels are satisfactory yet. I sure hope so....
Ok, and I took pics of it to show yall, and for some reason the files won't show up... stupid camera. It says 'preview not available' and won't let me open it or upload it anywhere. Oh well, I'll keep trying. I think I am rather pleased with the results.

Yeah, well pythons don't work too well for Saltwater though.

  • #107
that's true, bummer! how many buckets do you have? I just have this in my head of five buckets full of water sitting in your room waiting to go in, and then filling up another five to be dumped out! when I eventually go Saltwater im' going to have to think about this..........

I used 2.... I have 2 more, but they are currently full of the tons of gravel that came with the tank that I am now trying to find something to do with. I posted on local classifieds and such but no one seems to want it...

Took the readings...
.25 ammonia (I just added some)
1 nitrite ???
10 nitrate!!!!

That nitrite concerns me.... how on earth do I have the same amount of nitrite as I did before doing a 50 gallon water change?!?!?!?

bettafish2816
  • #112
because of the added ammonia?

I dunno... I added the ammonia no less than an hour ago. Would it convert it that fast?

bettafish2816
  • #114
hmm....probably not but I guess it depends on how much....

Hm... do you think if I didn't add ammonia for a few days that all the bacteria would die off? Cause that might give the nitrites a chance to catch up...

bettafish2816
  • #118
hmm....i'd wait until tomorrow and test again, see what kind of readings you get. if you're still showing really high nitrites, then maybe wait an extra day before adding more ammonia.

Sounds like a plan. That really weirds me out though.... I mean, that was well over a 50% change, how in the world did the nitrites stay the same?

bettafish2816
  • #120
yeah that seems kind of intense........why did you change the water again?
