My Marineland 100 penguin filter is unbearably loud.

I switched filters yesterday. I had a very silent one and now I have a marineland penguin 100 and it is so loud I can barely sleep. I have checked the impeller and nothing is wrong with it. I’ve also filled the water up to where the water comes out. Everything looks normal in the filter it is just very noisy and i can’t figure out why.

Is it the lid rattling? One of mine does that and I have to keep the top open a little to avoid that.

 

Have you tried lubricating the impeller? You should be able to pull the bushing off the end, slide off the impeller and lubricate the shaft.

yes and it didn’t do a lot when i did it

Is the water up to the water line—you said it was. I have read that that’s an issue (the filter being loud) until the wheel gets enough bb on it. Try taking the wheel off and see if that helps. Just to see and then you’ll know that once the wheel is dirty it will stop being loud.

 

Sometimes it takes awhile for the impeller to gunk up. Give it a few weeks. Things should quiet down.

 

Filters do quiet down with use. But it should not be "unbearably loud."
