My male guppies will not leave my platys alone!

My male guppies will not leave my platys alone! They are constantly chasing one of them and nibbling on its fins, the man in the shop ensured us they would be fine with platys but now I'm not so sure if I should keep them, any suggestions?

This is very typical behavior for a male guppy. They'll try to breed with anything, whether it's of the same species or not. Are your platies girls? Try providing lots of hiding spaces, however, this is the male guppy way and not likely to be changed or stopped. What size tank and how is it stocked?

Good advice. I see the same behavior with my guppies. Hiding places are key, as well as a high female-to-male ratio.

Hello cour...

Hopefully, you have a reasonably large tank, like 30 gallons or more. Livebearing fish are very active and will harass other fish unless the surface is heavily planted. Water sprite, Hornwort and Anacharis are all fast growing and will provide hiding places for the bullied fish. Guppies are more playful, than harmful. I wouldn't fret over this.

Only one of my platys is female, and all guppies are males, they seem to be harassing her and damaging her fins, the tank is 60 gallons, so plenty of space, concerned for her well being.

I would rehome the single female. I don't think it'll get better, even with adding more hiding spots.

If I bought more female platys and female guppies would that in any way help?

Maybe if I have a bigger selection of females rather then more males

If you do that, the females will breed and produce hundreds of fry, and you'll very quickly be overrun with fry. It's simpler and less stressful to rehome the single female.
