I went out to my LFS this afternoon and they have a tank with 3 beautiful Discus! I always admired them! They were ordered awhile back for a request and when they got them the lady that ordered them didn't want them anymore. They were $50 a piece. Anyway, I looked in there tank and said you sold the Discus? She looked at me with a sad face all quiet for a minute. I'm like what happend to them? ??? She said their tank CRASHED over this last weekend, they didnt know!!! She said the water was so COLD that it wouldn't register on the thermomater! Those poor things!

That's horrible. It can happen so quickly if a heater goes out.

She didn't want them anymore?!?!? I sure as heck hope they made her prepay prior to the purchase!!! The LFS I deal with here has been in business over 30 years. They quit doing 'refunds' for fish sometime a go for a few reasons:

a) it encouraged irresponsible fish keeping

b) they'd take the fish in, pay the customer for it, and then be stuck with it and not be able to sell it forcing them to either discount it below cost or cull it to make way for new inventory,

In the end it wound up increasing prices across the board due to extra work for everything. I hate the policy they have but I cans ee why they do it, and it definitely helps them out. They are able to keep prices down, to a bearable cost for quality fish and at the same time still operate and generate a healthy income/profit.

That's so sad! Did the heater give out or did the tank like literally fall apart? I was a little confused by the wording... Poor babies...

No, the woman didn't prepay! The owner set a policy when the woman didn't want them anymore, now if people want special fish then they have to prepay.

She said it crashed, then the water was really cold, so I am assuming she ment the heater gave out. We've had some really cold nights here. I think the building the fish are in doesn't have good heating.

An awful story. I know the staff at my LFS all seemed greatly hurt when they added a new water conditioner to their 600 gallon cichlid display tank. When they opened the next morning they had lost the entire tank of about 50+ cichlids.

Now that is sad! yeah, my LFS is very small, the only one we have here. They, the owner and Crystal his employee were upset about loosing them. Crystal was very upset about it, 1 of the Discus was still alive when she came in, tryed real hard to save him but couldn't. My LFS is closed on Sundays so that's why they didn't no!

Wow, I didn't think to ask. I can't believe I didn't think to ask. But I have to admit my wife and I were also upset by the news. The LFS has several very impressive display tanks. Aside from the 600g cichlid tank they also have a 400g shark tank, an 800g turtle / pleco tank and three 200 gallon salt water tanks. All for display only, the fish are not for sale. We always take time to enjoy the display tanks when shopping. And it certainly was sad to walk in and see the empty cichlid tank.

I’ll ask about the additive on my next visit. That’s never more then a week away. ;D

Cool, I'll be watching the thread for that. And your LFS sounds really nice, it must be huge!

It is most definitely huge. Aside from the massive display tanks the area where fish are kept for sale must include 200 or more aquariums. I’ve never actually counted the tanks but it resembles walking through grocery store isles. From floor to well over my head of aquariums and row after row. It quite a scene to see but could be very dangerous to your health if you suffer from MTS. I’ll take my camera along when I go back this week.

Where in Ontario are you from Dozey? My boyfriend is from London, Ontario, and I think we're going up this summer, so I might have to check it out for myself if it's anywhere close .

Well it just so happens that I live in London Ontario. Is that close enough?

Big Al’s on Wellington Rd. just down the street from White Oaks Mall, the largest mall in SWO, so if you are a shopper you might want to check that out too. But the LFS is definitely worth a visit. As soon as you walk in the door you are greeted by the shark tank and you just know you’re in a LFS with a difference.

Although don’t ask the staff any questions. Despite the very impressive store the staff doesn’t seem any more educated about fish then you would expect from PetSmart staff.

But even if I’m just dropping in for some fish food I’m sure to be there for a half hour or more.

As promised I've got pictures. Sorry not all the pictures came out as well as I hoped they would and I shrunk the pictures in order to save upload time. Pictures rarely do justice so I did have Fishlips stand in on a few of the pictures just to give the pictures some depth perception. I’ll break the pictures up over a few posts so bare with me.

In my original post I mistakenly mention that you are greeted by a 400g shark tank it is in fact 1000 gallon. But sadly they had no sharks in it today. But that’s the first picture. The second picture is the 600 gallon cichlid tank. And finally a couple of the saltwater tanks (these didn’t come out as well as I hoped). And finally a cascading tank in the rear of the store.

The next set of s are the “Center Piece” in the store. Really you have to see it really get an ideal of the size. It is huge, but pictures will have to do. In the lower levels they keep turtle, goldies and plecos. In the upper tanks are mixed fresh water communities.

And finally the grocery store of fish. Again the pictures just don’t do justice to how big this area really is. And once again I had Fishlips stand in for a picture just to give some perspective. (Fishlips is 5’6”).

So remember, if you ever find yourself in London Ontario Canada be sure to visit Big Al's on Wellington Rd.

Me too... Can't help but think that center piece would look amazing in the middle of my living room. The 1000 gallon tank along side my pool table in the games room and maybe the 600 gallon cichlid tank in my atrium. OH wait I’m forgetting… I’m not Bill Gates darn it.
