15 Gallon Tank My Heater Malfunction today

Hi guys,

It's been a while since I posted, I'm more of a reader of these topics.

Today, the heater on my only tank malfunctioned, we lost our 3 pepper Cory's. Our 8 Rummy nose tetra survived, a group of Red Rimmed Melania although very stressed seem ok. And my African Dwarf frog has amazingly survived.

The heater was a 50w Marina. Now replaced by a 50w Betta heater that I got.new today.

I've had tanks through my life, and never had something like that happen. The heater was about two years old.

This is my daughter's tank, and we are devastated by the loss of the 3 pepper Corys. They were fine fish and had grown to an amazing size.

This is by far the worst thing that's ever happened to me in fishkeeping.

Sadly, it happens. All you can do is try to be prepared for when it does. Do you guys use a thermometer in the tank or anything to easily monitor the temp? Granted, does no good if something happens when everyone is gone or asleep.

With my temperature slowing returning to normal I hope our remaining fish, snails and frog survive this ordeal

Most can survive some swings. I don't know too many places in the world where the water stays the same temp day in and day out.

Hi,

Yeah, we have a stick on temperature strip. Today we also added a glass temperature stick in the tank. And the child has taken the job to read it each morning. Feels like we are closing the door after the horse has bolted, taking.this step.
The tank was going so well, plants were thriving, and finally had our light levels right for low tech plants.
I guess it's just one of these things.

I'm so sorry to hear that! It's a heart breaking thing to happen. I lost a big family of cories due the Great Stealth Visa-Therm malfunction fiasco a few yews ago.
Sure takes the wind out of your sails

Crossing fingers everyone else recoups.

It looks like the Rummy noses, snails and frog are going to survive. I guess we got super lucky, becuae people seem to lose whole tanks when this happens from what I am reading.
