I hate this thing. I tried to start it up once but it didn't have water in it. Then i put water in it and it was good, but out of the blue it stopped working. The water was still in it, there was nothing stuck, and everything is plugged in. I know this isn't a problem about electricity because my heater works just fine. How do I fix this? EDIT: the filter is not making any noise when i start it. When I didn't put water in the filter, it made a noise. But now it makes no noise at all. Nothing is moving. My stepdad notices the motor was really hot, but i can,t find anything that could be stuck.

My best trick for HOBs that aren't running or being silly is to take apart the impeller, clean the housing, and make sure it's put back in properly. Even a little piece of sand can cause it to jam or go off center. It's all magnetic, so anything obstructing the magnet or pushing the impeller off to the side can cause it to just stop spinning. If the actual pump can be screwed off the HOB, I would do this all in a bucket full of water so you can play with it until it's working again.

It could be an electrical circuiting problem. Plug it in and jiggle the cord where it meats the filter, and push the filter from side to side. I did this once and it has worked since.

Sometimes it is a mystery why they stop working but for whatever reason, taking it apart and putting it back together almost always solves the problem for me ;) glad it's working now!
