My Gold And Blue Rams

HI Everyone, Just sharing a few photos of my Rams! I believe I have a male Blue Ram and female Gold Ram but not positive. I just love watching these 2. Actually just picked up the gold last night and they immediately started getting along and seem to be liking each other.

Nice pics! First one the blue looks female. There is only one blue? I’m thinking 2 females.

yeah just the one blue and one gold. in the first pic, are you thinking female because of the blue dots so close to the black spot??? That pic was taken when I first introduced the gold to the tank and the blue's colors really darkened up for about an hour or so.

No the rounded anal and dorsal fins.
ah interesting.. so looking close at them in the tank now.. when fully extended the blue definitely has a more rounded dorsal fin towards the back as displayed in the first and last pic. not sure why they don't look as rounded in the other 2 pics... anyhow, looking at Gold in the tank right now, it looks more angled / non-rounded when fully extended and swimming around, etc.... think still both Female?? i'm really not sure at all

Need better pictures of the Gold, but the blue is a male, he’s just young. I have a few with short fanned analfins. His breeding tube is out, small, sharp, and tapers back.

An Angel Ram?
interesting enough I just found this on Live Aquaria. Almost looks like a Balloon ram however I don't believe that is what I have because neither of my Rams have a body like that..

Your rams are not angel rams AKA balloon disasters .
Thinking gold is male unless you see some real red on belly soon. Nice looking .
Think the first is female and looks to be from black lines IMO .
Did you get them both from same place ?
You only need to accurately sex one if they both get along . They know who they are for sure .
The darkening up and blue spangles in spot could of have been her letting him know since she seems pretty butch ! Part of the black female thing IMO ..
I have lots that are not black enough to call black but different enough from blue GBR to recognize when I see it .
Both good looking fish eitherway .

yep both from the same LFS. I'm pretty sure the Gold is a bit older as they've had the golds in the same tank for a while now and I saw the gold's when they were smaller / younger. The blue is definitely younger however as the LFS got them in recently. I thought I had a Blue Male / Gold Female but you could be right either way. they do seem to get along. The blue REALLY darkened up when I first introduced the Gold as you see in the first pic!

so I just read in another community here: Sexing German Blue Rams
that females will have Black lines on their Pelvic Fins. Since my Blue Ram has the black lines maybe you are right that it's a female? have you heard the black lines on Pelvic fins being a sexing detail for Females or have you seen Males with the black lines? Now i'm wondering if my Gold is indeed a Male or a Female too.

Both can have the black on pelvic fins .That is an old method like many of the others but the least accurate these days IMO .

Mikrogeophagus RamirezI - Blue Ram Cichlid Guide

Read my guide, I give picture examples of how to sex. You have the advantage of being there in person to study. Their behavior can also tell you a lot.

This link isn’t highlighted for some reason (on my screen), if that’s the case you can find it stickied to the top of the “Ram” section.

The Gold is a male Longfin. Difficult to see in those photos, but the extreme length of the ventrals is obvious, and in one shot the length of the analfin also looks rather exaggerated.

Angel Rams are technically longfinned balloon rams. The strain was originally marketed as a hybrid between a Ram and an Angelfish! This was probably an attempt to dissuade hobbyist breeders, though balloon bellies are often sterile anyway.

Thanks chromedome52 , I was actually just reviewing AquaticJ 's Ram Guide and have been looking at all of the features on both of my Rams. So Gold absolutely has an extremely long pelvic fin. that is what i've noticed the most. So I think we are confirmed the Gold is a Male and a Longfin as you say. I'm still torn with the Blue though, it seems to have identifying features of both a Female or Male. Might indeed be a juvenile Male as others have said. it doesn't have the long pelvic fins, it has some blue dots around and very close to the black dot but not in the middle of the black dot. I'm yet to see a pink belly and it has the black lines on the pelvic fins (which I now understand was an old way of sexing).. Maybe I have Male Gold and Juvenile Male Blue then. Hope they get along ok!!! has anyone had luck with just 2 males?? they have lately been chasing and charging each other here and there but nothing i'm too concerned about at the moment.
