my friend needs help! please! asap!

I've been talking to her on msn just now and this is what she told me :

"okay my fish about 2 weeks ago one of my fish died so I was like okay and I put water purifier in the tank but it kinda landed on my other fishes eye so I was like oops and the day after the fishes eye was huuuge so I was like , anyway today that fish is like swimming frantically around the tank and swimming on its side (I'm guessing its guna die) but I noticed that like the first time in 2 weeks the eye is normal but he/shes acting really wierd. sorry for the essay lol"

I asked her what type of water purifier it was and she said it was a Tetra aqua safe, which I have experience with. Its quite good and I use it to de-clorinate the water. I wasn't sure what to tell her so I told her for now water changes never hurt so I think she's doing one now. I then asked her weather the other fish that died was acting weirdly before and she said "that is just seemed to rest on the bottom of the tank"

Then she explained that recently its been gasping for air, so recomended getting an air-pump and air stone which might help. Then I asked her to explain how its been acting/swimming and her response was - "its like standing up and spinning around loads in the water and its like twirling about"

After this I didn't really know how to help so i've come for advise here! please help. I think the fish she has are goldfish, in I think a 20gall.

thanks

Does she know her Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate readings? You know we always ask about these if anything appears to be wrong with fish

I am sure your friend is really stressed out about her fish. No matter what happens with this last one, I hope you can help her understand the proper way to set up a tank, and in doing so maybe have better success the next time.
#1 Water going in needs the de-chlorinator before the fish go in. Ideal conditions would suggest the tank be cycled FIRST! Temp has to be what the fish can stand, and the fish need to be introduced slowly, adding a little tank water to the bag, as you float it in the tank, then add a little more and so on for up to 2 hours, BEFORE you add the new fish to your tank.
#2 The symptoms you described can be anything from stress (hanging on the bottom), to 'popeye', and swim bladder disease. Stress from chlorine, or bad water conditions, and adding them to new water too quickly can allow pre-existing conditions that they may not have fallen ill to, to take hold, and end up killing them.

So it sounds like your friend needs to do some research, and study here on the forum, and hopefully she will be able to save this fish, and have more success in the future.

If she can get prime to treat the water with, i'd have her get him in a covered container and totally change the water for new water treated with prime, then acclimate him like you would after bringing a fish home from the pet shop.

Are the gills red or purplish? It sounds like either a swim bladder disorder or ammonia/nitrite poisoning. feeding the fish small pieces of thawed, frozen, peeled pea would be good (is the fish eating?) and the prime could help with poisoning, along with the air pump. what is the water temp at?

Thanks! I'll ask her all these things and let you know what she says.

susitna-flower - The tank has been cycled, she's had it up over a year, maybe nearly 2 years now if I can remember correctly, so its nothing to do with acclimating them to quickly cause they've been fine until now. + I think what she did was do a water change after the first one died and she just put the water in the tank then put the de-clorinator in afterwards as she adds water to the tank with a jug. I remember talking about this with her a while back.

Dave - I'll ask her if its eating and suggest the pea, + I'll ask if she can get Prime and what the water temp is at.

Isabella - I'll let you know about the Ammonia, NitrAte and NitrItes.

She sayd she'd meet me online this morning, so hopefully I'll have answers for you later on today.

As an old fuddy-duddy, over the hill, 50 + grandma, I would have to say it is a trend to try to sound "gangstah", taken on by kids all over the world.
My son (17) and I were just talking about it this morning. He is making a decision about college, where he wants to study to be a writer. Since a very young child his teachers commented to him that he expressed himself well. Communication is extremely necessary in relationships and job performance. This can be as simple as gestures, manner of speech, dress, body piercings and tattoos, these all express to other people things you want to tell them about yourself.
When young people aren't taught this form of "talk" just sets them apart into that group that will not be given the good job, or chance to go on to higher education, they have to find it out the hard way.
Whether it is the piercings, dress, or manner of speach, people should make the decision of whether they want to conform to "society rules" based, not on wanting to fit into their immediate peer group, but on where they want to go with their life.

OK OK, I'll get off my soap box.........

lol. ye I did copy and paste it from what she said on msn! lol When u say it sounds english how do u mean? To me it just sounds really welsh! E.g. - she says "like" all the time! So do I usualy, I just tend not to when I'm on fishlore, dnt know why! lol
When I'm talking usualy I say "like" all the time without really realising it! I guess when I type here I'm more aware of it and don't type it.

Anyway, I asked her for the Ammonia NitrIte and NitrAte tests and everything was fine, (A - 0, NI - 0, NA - 10) so it wasn't that the water chemistry was bad, but unfortunately he died this mornin. She texted me just after she found him. :-\

thanks for all the help anyway.

Phonetic spelling is always kinda fun, you could try that... But explainations for how things would be pronounced, using similarly sounding parts of words would probably help too.

for those un-initiated, or simply english speaking, like me, its name translates as "The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave".

Yikes... Well, basic conversational words wouldn't be that long hopefully?

I doubt people refer to "The Church of St. Mary in the hollow of the white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave" very often in normal conversation. Unless they're asking for directions, in which case, the name is fairly self explanitory!

baisically people call it Llanfair or Llanfairpwll. lol. Obviously they can't fit it all on a road sign either! lol

Just testing you Gwenz! It's only 20 miles from me and I just had to throw that in! I think it would be very useful to take on the welsh teaching, and you might want to use the voice conference facility on MSN to help with pronunciation of words. Either that or set up a cd course, all it would cost is postage and a couple of cd's and then Tazmiche could hear the correct way to say a word and learn it parrot fashion. You could do a whole series of them from basic conversation to fluency and market them, like Linguaphone do!

Reminds me of Mark Twain's essay on learning German, where he said some German words start on Tuesday and end on Thursday....

Seriously wouldn't mind doing this, but we have to bare in mind I'm still at school and will have lots of homework this year. >

considering I want to be a teacher when I'm older, doing this could be a gd idea! lol didn't know there was a voice conference thing on msn. ???
Another way of doing it is for me to teach over msn, but you coiuld buy some kind of cd or PC-cd to help with pronouciation! lol.

the record voice clip thing is where the smilies, nudges and font buttons are. It is a speech bubble with a speaker symbol in it. You need to have a mic to use it but you just click and hold to record, it sends as you release! Next time we are on msn I'll dig out my headset to show you!!
