30 Gallon Tank My friend is giving me her 6 inch Featherfin Catfish, what else can I put in....

I just got a 30 gallon fish tank with everything included. I haven't set it up just yet but will be soon. My friend is giving me her 6 inch long Featherfin Catfish. I was wondering what other kinds of fish I could put in with them knowing that it will get a bit bigger and is semi-aggressive. I've read it does well with beta's, red-finned sharks, angelfish, and other catfish. But I was wondering if anyone had any more colourful ideas? Preferrably not tetra (though I don't think they'd be a good choice anyhow) due to the fact I've had them growing up and they breed like rabbits, and I prefer a fish that's a bit bigger in size. Any suggestions would be great.

 

I believe feather fins stay on the smaller aide between 10 and 8 inchea.

Basically it is very territorial so I would not reccomend bottom dwellers.

Maybe a pair of convicts or some rams. Just no bottom dwellers

 

Yeah, I was reading up on them the max they can grow is 11.8 inches thanks for the ram and convicts suggestion, might get some of those. Might get a couple red finned sharks too... not sure yet. That's why I posted

 

I don't know about the rams, since you're posting in the beginner section; they can be touchy to keep. However, I'm a beginner too and will be trying them soon, so hey XD if you feel you're up to the challenge...
The Convicts might be easier. I'd be leery about mixing the two based on what I've read.
EDIT: I'm also reading that you can really only keep one of those sharks per tank because they tend to attack each other when they become adults.

 

Yeah, I wouldn't put the convicts and rams together. As for the sharks, the way to have it is to have at least 3 2 females 1 male. But they do really well in groups with 4 females to 1 male. But it wouldn't be good to have just 2 or 2 males to 1 female kind of thing. I've had the sharks before, they are lots of fun. If you have not tried them yet I definitely suggest it

 

Since it's been suggested that you avoid bottom-dwelling fish, I would maybe reconsider sharks. Also bettas generally do not do well in community tanks so I would pass on one of those as well.

 

I'm guessing you're saying no to the sharks due to their semi-aggressive behavior? I've looked a lot of information up on the Featherfin and it says it does very well with the red-tailed sharks. As for betta's I have no interest in them. I have had some before in a tank with my pleco's and goldfish and they did fine... But thanks for the reply

Maybe angels because mine don't go to the bottom and featherfin cat.

As long as you stay away from bottom dwellers you should be fine

 

Well, I have enough room for another bottom dweller as long as I put two caves on either side of the tank. But I don't think I'll be getting any other bottom feeders.

 

This is for 30 gallons? If so, I'm quite shocked at the suggestions people are giving.


I have my featherfin in 75 gallons. I cannot see him in a 30 gallon tank, he'd be squished. 30 gallons also eliminates all of the shark species for you. It is a good size tank for bottom dwellers like corys and some loach species.
