My First Tank :o

Hello!

In about a week I will be moving back to UnI and we are allowed to have up to 25 gallons in total between 1 or more tanks. I am studying Marine Biology and really wanted to keep fish (I do not know what part of the MB interests me the most, so this is my little test). However, I do not know what I should start off with....

So far I was thinking a 10 gallon, fresh water community tank with maybe guppies or danios. But I wanted some opinions on what a good set up would be.

Welcome to fishlore!

If you go with danios make sure to go for a small type of danio. Most common types such as zebra, leopard, pearl and giant danios need a bigger tank. Celestial pearl danios or gold ring danios would work well.
Have you seen the 10 gallon stocking list?

No I have not seen the 10 gallon stocking list. I have been doing research for the last couple of weeks on this because it would break my heart if a fish died due to my negligence, so I understand a bit about over stocking a tank.

A female Betta is a great star of a 10 gallon community tank. They can usually be kept with shrimp, snails, and even neon tetras. I have a clown pleco in mine, but we never see him. 10 gallon tanks are awesome places to start fish keeping.

Here's a link to it. It is a pretty exhaustive list of fish that are suitable for a 10 gallon. It gives scientific and common names and how many you could have.
Stocking options for 10 gallons

Some good options are endlers, guppies, platies, ember tetras, chilI rasboras, green neon tetras, celestial pearl danios, gold ring danios, peacock gobies, scarlet badis, sparkling gouramis or a betta. Those are the most common choices.

You have a few non fishy options too. Most of those fish work well with some amano shrimp, ghost shrimp or snails. If you wanted you could do 3 or 4 African dwarf frogs instead of fish.

I was looking at the list, but is not very clear on which fish would work well together. I do not necessarily want to fill my tank with just one type of fish or 1 bigger fish. I would like a little variety. I really like the idea of amano shrimp.

Which of the fish do you like? If you give us a list of the fish you like we can discuss possible options including them.

Well like I mentioned at first, I really like Guppies and Danios. However, I read somewhere that those two would not go good together since the Danios would chase and nip at the Guppies. I also like the Neon tetra.

....a type of schooling fish and some bottom feeders? Yeah I have no idea! lol

Ok so I just love guppies.

But I also like:
Danios
Neon Tetra
endlers

Neon tetras need 20+ gallons. Welcome to fish lore. You are getting a better start then I. If it were me here is what I would do: 3 male guppies, 10 neocardina davida shrimp and three male endlers

I have kept guppies with zebra and leopard danios no problem. Danios aren't nippy when kept in proper schools. Celestial pearl danios are very shy and I've never heard of them being at all aggressive.

Neon tetras need a bigger tank but green neons would work

How about
1 male guppy
8 celestial pearl danios
6 amano shrimp

Or
8 green neon tetras
3 endlers
6 amano shrimp

Male bettas can also be kept in a community tank, just don't put 2 of them in there.

Yea drag me into this. Lol .in a 10 gallon I wouldn't do a betta with any other fish .They claim 10-15 gallons of a tank as their territory so if you want to try a betta in a community I would do a 20 gallon tank. Honestly I would do a 20 over a 10 no matter what fish you chose .
20 gallon
6-8 neon tetras
6-8 zebra or leopard danios. Can be a mix of regular and long fin
10 cherry or ghost shrimp. Or 6 ammano shrimp .

1 betta male or female
8 ember tetras
4 male endless
Shrimp as above

Side note neon tetras are sub tropic and bettas are tropical fish so they really aren't a good match .

She's just starting out I think it would be better if she started with one betta first.... which she isn't

10 gallons is really going to limit you. I suggest you do a species only tank if you do go with a 10 gallon though really a 20 gallon would still be better even for this route. With a species only tank you'll get to observe the fish acting a bit more "naturally", as much as they can in a small enclosure at least. Livebearers WILL have babies unless you go with either all males or all females.
Oh, and...
WELCOME TO FISH LORE!!!
