My First Tank: An Unexpected Journey

Okay, Let's begin from the start.

When I was 12 my parents got me my first tank, my favorite fish in the tank was the Glass Catfish. I got out of the Army in November and went back to college. Since I couldn't have my dog with me in my apartment, I decided to spend some GI Bill money on a tank that I would keep for awhile.

The day is March 30th and I decided to finally follow through with my plan of getting a new fish tank, conveniently aligned with the local Petco $1 per gallon sale....go figure. I wanted a 10 or 15 gallon tank to ease into the hobby again. But the 29 gallon tank was 29 dollars!

I noticed the GloFish tank and decided to go for a dual look in my tank! I wanted a Glow in the dark tank during the night, and a colorful tropical tank with glass catfish during the day! I had everything planned out with the tank, lighting, food, and possible fish combinations.

My roommates decided to surprise me with my "first fish" for my new tank, 3 weeks ahead of schedule. They knew my plan for a Glow in the Dark tank with a tropical day time tank so they got me a SINGLE GloFish Tetra. I did some research into the tetra and realized it would never be happy without a school. I bought a couple more GloFish Tetras and was planning to begin the cycle. Then my girlfriend showed up with FIVE Neon Tetras because they looked cool at the pet store... I found Fishlore shortly after when I was panicking about the cycle with so many fish already.

Anders gave me some great advice on my first thread here and I learned a ton about Freshwater keeping in a short amount of time. On April 2nd, I added my first batch of TSS and the tank looked a little like this.....

I learned that bamboo was a bad option for an aquarium and decided to throw them out for the upcoming Petco Sale on April 17th. I allowed my tank to cycle and prepared for the sale of fish on April 17th.

The day was here! I added 4 glass catfish, replaced some neon tetras, (I had added some Cory Catfish earlier due to overfeeding issues with the GloFish), I bought some new live plants to replace my current ones that just didn't look right.

I've been fighting some algae and apparently (learned today) a mini-cycle of the nitrogen cycle.

My future plans for this tank include adding more live plants, grasses and mosses with more driftwood, for a natural look and removing anything fake. I have to re-scape everything with a more plant friendly substrate and add some other things that will come later.

Keep checking on this post for updated information and questions by me to the more experienced members!

I got really impatient today with how the plants were arranged. I wanted the grass to spread and after staying up till 2 am looking at aquascapes and tips on how to begin, I noticed my grass was all clumped together into two piles in the front and back of the tank. I got home and went to work on moving plants and spreading the grass out to give it a chance to grow into the whole floor of the sand.
