I got a tank about 2 days ago... everything was working fine. This morning my filter overfilled and then spilled water everywhere. Now it keeps doing that.

Maybe disassemble and clean out the filter or replace the filter cartridge?

If it’s a whisper filter that’s normal (all three of mine do that) just put it lower down. If it’s not a whisper filter then what kind is it? What size is your tank? Pictures?

It is a whisper filter, 10 gallon aqueon tank. How do I lower it??? The water right now is right at the top and I put a rag In case it started flowing I would have time to get to it.

What are you planning on putting in the tank? A Betta would love you forever if you put him in there and they are really cool. They do need lots of entertainment (mirrors, plants moved around every other day, things to swim through, snails, platy’s exedra exedra) and require either silk or live plants. It’s all worth it in the end though bc you get to save a Betta and have a new friend!

I haven’t decided yet as I’m still cycling. But plenty of people have suggested a Betta so I might do that. I have some time to figure it out though!

I have 3 males about to be 4 maybe 5 (recusing 2 from a person that has them in SMALL vases with mables and NOTHING else. They both have fin rot and one is BLOATED. But I have to say that out of all the other fish I have and have had betta’s have the best personality and appearance and are by far my favorite.

Some people have said Betta’s Can do good in a tank with other animals such as shrimp and snails and maybe some fish. I originally wanted school fish but my small tank and simple filter isn’t enough to hold a good enough bioload to make it interesting. So I was telling my friend yesterday I wanted a really nice centerpiece fish who would swim around a lot

If you’re going to be getting a betta fish, I wouldn’t buy from petco, petsmart, or pets supplies plus. If you want a fish that’s going to last more than a few months and isn’t going to need rounds and rounds of medications, I would suggest looking at local fish stores around you that aren’t chain companies. Any of the bettas I’ve purchased from chain pet stores have died within less than a year. The ones I’ve purchased from a nice local fish store have been with me for years with no issues what so ever; kind of blows my mind that I haven’t had to treat them for anything yet. They were more expensive but well worth the money.

That could also be you or bad luck. If you look at Them carefully you can decide which one is in the best condition. I’ve been keeping betta’s for about 9 years and I always got them from petco and they take good care of them health wise. Petsmart on the other hand not so much.

Eeemmm, not to come off as rude or mean, but I would call it more like they don’t know how to take care of animals and notoriously sell unhealthy stock because the companies policies on animal care are absolutely horrendous and employees are left to follow them. Then they’ll give you a sick animal for 50% off because they’re just going to go stick it in the freezer once you leave. You shouldn’t have to look at animals and think to yourself “okay, so which ones here aren’t dying?” Not only are their fish generally unhealthy, they have policies in place that let them house 50 plus baby bearded dragons together, new born chameleons kept together with only standing water (they don’t drink from standing water, they drink from a dripper), throwing away live iguanas, their feeders are appalling, hamsters are sold with wet tail, I’ve seen their full grown adult mice eating each other with employees walking by and doing nothing, I could go on and on but I’ll stop. It is not just my locations, it happens at all of them.

Even if you’re able to find a healthy animal, I don’t support buying from companies that have policies in place that are for money - not the welfare of animals. There are plenty of locally owned pet and fish stores that deserve your business way more.

Interestingly enough, there aren’t any fish stores that I know of in my area other than chain stores. There use to be one I went into once yearssss ago but it has since closed down.

I agree petco seems to be slightly better than pet smart at least some. That’s what I’ve seen from here.

I have always wanted to work at a pet store, and have thought about working in petco or pet smart as they are basically the only ones I’m my area. However, news like this is what scares me from doing so...I would hate to be part of that and need to do something I know isn’t good for the animal. The only petco’s ive seen that are in great condition are the ones who hire people who know about a certain animal and then position them there. Luckily in my petco the guy who works in the fish section seems very knowledgeable and his information coordinates well with what I see here.

He was feeding the eels the other day and was just spouting information about them and each ones personality (especially the biter) lol!

And while you are correct, most petstores are awful but some can be good. They do all get them from horrible breeders but that dose t mean that they can’t take good care of them when they get there. While it’s olny about %7 of the stores take good care it’s still %7 so you can’t hate all of them. I have gotten very good quality betta’s from Petco and it’s not “ “okay so which ones aren’t dying”” all o them are well taken care of.

The problem with this argument is you’re still supporting a place that buys animals from mills, not breeders - there’s a big difference between actual breeders and where chain pet stores get their animals. Just because say 7% of them sell “healthy” animals, doesn’t mean that’s just enough cause to give them your money so they can continue buying mistreated animals.

And like I said previously, it’s not the employees’ fault. Petco and Petsmart both have POLICIES in place that are harmful to the welfare of their animals, if the employees try to improve on living conditions they are quickly chastised for going against the policy. The policies are the same for every single store, it’s company policy. So if company policy to set up enclosures incorrectly (which...spoiler alert - it is), then allllllll of the stores have animals being kept in incorrect enclosures.

But anyways, this isn’t OP’s question. Purchase your animals from whatever store you wish, just be aware of what you’re contributing to - and know a small local pet store would be more deserving of your business.

I have the 20I version. you can change out the filter media for more BB. cut the filter material off and use it since it'll already have a little bit of BB on it.

I learned it from this guy

I have seeded filter material at the very bottom, placed some polyfill about halfway full, then on top Biomax ceramic rings.

I managed to fix my problem by lowering the filter and not using the actual thing the filter brings but instead filling it with different media. I got tiger barbs after getting another type of fish and some of my tiger fish died because of some dumb mistakes I made and I ended up bringing the others back. My aquarium for fish is on hold as I’m moving states but I will be starting a 29 gallon soon and hope for better results. I currently have an Axolotl in this tank and have had her for over 6 months just fine

If your from Mass then there is a good possibility we both go to the same Petco ( Route 1 South Attleboro ) If that's the case then yes I 100% back you on their knowledge in there. They keep their tanks and Betta bowls very well maintained. Hope you have better luck with the 29... Good Luck!!
