My Eggs My Eggs

I was so excited last night to finally see a pair of Angels had formed and laid eggs. Dear old dad was tending to them carefully while mom was keeping a look out. 12 hrs later I turn the lights on and everyone wakes up.... And it was so sad just like the begining of finding nemo all the eggs were gone except the mom fish seemed to be yelling :;b at the dad angelfish for not protecting them.... Any who how long do I have till they"ll lay again? Would it be better to move the other fish out to a different tank or should the pair be comfortable moving to a new tank? I don't want to shock them and cause them not to breed again. Any tips?

Welcome to FishLore!
It's really exciting finding eggs
With good food and clean water they will lay every two weeks if the eggs or fry are removed.

You can do either- remove the other tank mates or move mom and dad.

cool Thanks, I'll be sure to get a second tank before then... Would 40 be enough just for the pair?

I always move my pairs from the community tank into 25 gallon tanks and they do fine. Depending on the fish and how well you feed them - females may spawn again after 1 week if they lose their eggs. The rule of thumb though is generally every 10 days.

Hello and welcome to fishlore

I would personally put the pair in there own aquarium but make sure that your ph levels and temperature are at the same levels if the tank you move them in to is already established nitrate nitrogen and ammonia levels should be ok. I keep my breeding pairs in 20 gallon tanks and they lay eggs like clock work every 12-14 days. Do you have any pictures to show us?

I watched this evening as other fish got the eggs from a pair of Angelfish. I did not need another spawn at the moment, so I let nature take its course. Chances are quite slI'm at raising any in a tank with other fish in it. Even the beloved little bristle nose pleco loves them.

A 20 gallon would do well as a tank for a breeding pair. Of course some angels are larger than others. I have some Angels that I would not feel comfortable even just keeping one in a 30 gallon long tank.

But then I have a few pairs that are small enough that are just fine even in a 10 gallon for a short period. I will let them spawn, stay with the fry for a while, and then return them to the big tank. Reintroduction into the tank could get tricky, but so far, I have had not problems. Could be because the main tank is so large.

The thing about keeping the fry in a larger tank is that when you feed them in a smaller tank, they don't have to search high and low to find the small amount of food that they need. I also usually turn the sponge filter off for a short while, so that it doesn't suck up all the tiny particles of food. Then plug in back in a short while later.

Good luck with any future spawns. If you do get a new tank, just be sure that it is fully cycled or seeded before putting the fish into it.
