My Dogs And The Fireworks In My Neighborhood Tonight

Hi. I have three dogs: Little Bitty (Bitty), the Chihuahua (mix?), Samwise Gamgee (Sam), who seems like a Beagle/Doberman mix, and Marley, who the shelter said is a Rhodesian Ridgeback/American Staffordshire Terrier mix. Two of them, Sam and Marley, are scared of loud noises. Marley is TERRIFIED even if she just thinks it MIGHT get loud. She's smart, so she knows what fireworks and thunder sound like when they're far away or somehow not as loud as usual. Sam just gets more anxiety than usual (he's pretty much always anxious) when the sound is already loud. Usually, Sam is distrustful of Marley because of her history of aggression (we keep her because she's not a threat to any human life and she would have no chance anywhere else and we love her) and he will often stare at her to upset her. Well, tonight, when it was time to let them outside, there were fireworks that were kind of loud, so Marley wouldn't go out. Sam and Bitty went out. Pretty quickly, Bitty wanted to come back in, so I let her. While I was putting Marley's Thundershirt (a piece of clothing that helps a lot of dogs with anxiety) on her and putting the dog bed in the laundry room so Marley could comfortably be away from the noise, I forgot that Sam was still outside while the fireworks were happening. I feel bad about that, but it was an accident. I closed the door to the laundry room to keep the sound out and let Marley have a break from the other dogs (they all stress each other out sometimes), then I went to let Sam in. Sam had too much anxiety and got somewhat calmer when he saw Bitty was ok. Then got somewhat calmer when he saw I was ok (I guess this was when he just assumed my mom, who lives here, too, was ok lol). Then he went to the spot where the dog bed usually is because Marley is almost always on the dog bed. But she and the bed weren't there. He got more anxious again and started looking for her. I opened the door to the laundry room and when he saw her, he completely calmed down. He was glad that she was ok. He loves her. So cute!

I know the feeling! My 8 month old puppy kept me up well past midnight (3:30 am) last night because the neighbors were shooting off fireworks in the middle of the night. He's going to hate the fourth.

Lol 3:30! But the poor puppy must've been scared out of his mind. The Thundershirt helps Marley a lot. You could check it out for yours.

Lol my mom and I have to plan fireworks holidays around Marley's pathological fear and inability to self-soothe. One Fourth of July, I sat in the laundry room with her for what I think was about an hour and a half to calm her down. Sam is usually okay as long he's inside the house. Sometimes, the fireworks don't seem to scare him.

To be honest it is trainable and is often caused by human (re)action in the first place. We have the luck our dogs don't even react. On new years evening we walk them even at 23.30 and there are people around throwing fireworks already. Same with lightning and thunder btw

Don't show you feel sorry for them, don't cuddle or even speak to them. It maybe difficult but they'll react based on your reaction.

You're lucky... My beagle sits on the porch and just barks at them all night. He's not scared at all, just barks. No idea why.

I have a very nervous recent rescue dog who had a kind of rough early life, and who is very easily terrified. She always fears the worst from people and things, although she is by nature an easy going, kind older dog.
She's a refugee from the USA, and this is her first Canadian summer. We have back to back fireworks weekends in my region. Two weeks ago they scared her out of her wits, but the whole family played it calm, gave her a little reassurance and acted like it was no big deal.
This weekend, she was just extremely suspicious of the fireworks. She didn't like the exploding sky a lot, but she looked at it like she figured Canadians have rainbow thunderstorms.

I have this article that might come in handy:

And, yes, it's PETA. I'm aware that many people aren't fond of them.
Cute story!
