My Black Moor Has A Red Lump On Its Mouth....

Apollo, my black moor has this large, round, bright red lump on his mouth. I suspect that he hit his mouth while chasing after my smaller female black moor. This is what I asked another place for help for (but they didn't answer) to save time:

"Recently (yesterday) I found that my black moor goldfish, apollo, has a red lump on his mouth. I suspect that he bumped his mouth on decor while chasing my smaller female black moor. I was hoping that you could tell me what this red lump is because I have no idea. It doesn't seem to have any fungus on it but he is starting to act weird like swimming slower and floating for a bit before swimming again. He still chases the female though."

Now, he just stays at the top of the tank at all times, almost like he is struggling to breathe. He is always at the top of the tank until I walk towards the tank to look at him...then he swims to the bottom but shortly, he'll swim back up. I hope I get I response asap because i'm worried sick for him and it has been 3 days now...Also, I can't really check the ammonia levels, nitrogen levels and such cause I don't have the right equipments for it and I don't think I will sooner or later....

I'm no expert, but looks like the beginning of mouth rot to me. Gypsy13, Goldiemom, or GoldFiska could probably verify and/or help with treatment.

Hey Goldiemom look at this little guy for me! Please hubby says it doesn’t look well. If he thinks it looks off, there’s something wrong.

BakaRikkI you say you don’t test the water?
Questions: filter? Heater? Size of tank? Number of fish? How often do you do water changes? Do you have or can you get aquarium salt and methylene blue? (Plain Sea salt with no additives is fine as well)

Goldiemom will come on a bit later and look. In the mean time, I’d do a partial water change using prime or whatever water conditioner you use. If you have 3% hydrogen peroxide, soak a cotton swab in it and gentle dab all the red area and right around the red areas.
Answer my questions as soon as you can. If it’s at all possible, please get a liquid ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph test kit. API has a good master test kit that works very well. I’ll check back soon.

Welcome! It doesn’t look good. Never seen it before. Just a bright red area that looks almost like a growth. It is raised. It could be an injury. Are you keeping the water clean? You need to know the water parameters if you are going to keep fish. I see you don’t know of the nitrogen cycle. How long have you had these little guys? Do you have a local fish store that can test your water for you? Sorry for all the questions but this will help us figure out what to do. Gypsy-it has s swollen. Perhaps giving him Epsom salt baths will help. Take a gallon of water ( be sure to use chlorine remover) and add 1 teaspoon of Epsom salt, not aquarium salt. Put the fish in and let him swim for 2 minutes. Then place him back in tank. This will help reduce swelling. Do this a couple of times a day until it improves. Keep us posted! If your tank is new, it needs to be cycled. Please read on nitrogen cycle in beginner forum of this site.

I checked what I could get my hands on at the moment.
pH: 7.5
Ammonia (turns out I do have this): 0

and that's it. I have two black moors and they are temprarily staying in a 34L tank (which is too small, I know, but I might be able to get a 90L tank soon for them. i'm slowly working my way up to bigger tanks) I change their water every 3 days but ever since this had happened, I have been changing it every day. Also, yesterday night, I had just put in a fungus cure medicine for them, (it's green) and I was hoping that would stop it from growing for the time being. Apollo is acting more 'normal' now, but lump is still there and doesn't really seem like it's going anywhere. I do not have a filter yet but I have a air stone. I don't have a heater but I do have sea salt. Although , i'm not too sure if the sea salt is safe for them cause it doesn't say whether it is deiodises or not. All it says is it's natural sea salt. I don't have 3% hydrogen peroxide and i'm notr sure where to get it.

If no filter, then the tank isn’t cycled which is bad news. Your fish won’t live long I’m afraid if you don’t get them in larger cycled tank. Please read on the nitrogen cycle to understand what I’m talking about. Until then, they will need daily water changes with a water conditioner that removes chlorine if you have it in your water.

I do have a local pet store, but i'm unsure whether or not they accept testing waters. I will try to as soon as possible though. I'm trying my best to keep the water clean. and I have had apollo for about a week now.

You have to get them in a cycled tank. Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate is toxic to them. Please read this. Aquarium Nitrogen Cycle Until your filter is cycled, change at least 50% of the water daily with chlorine remover.

What’s the name of the fungus medicine you used? You should be able to get hydrogen peroxide at just about any retail store or pharmacy depending on where you live. Hopefully the fungus medicine you put in will help. Do keep doing the daily water changes. A sponge filter will only cost you six dollars give or take. Which water conditioner are you using?
