My Betta is Changing Colors

So I have been away for only 1 day and somehow, my betta is changing colors. also one of her eyes are clouded. I researched a little and I've heard that they can change colors and it happens when they get used to the tank, but she's been in that tank for a little more than a week, so why is she just changing colors now??? I've seen that female bettas can live with other fish, so I also got 3 Black skirted tetras, 2 gold skirted tetras, 2 guppies, and 1 black molly. The black molly seems to be bullying the other fish, but my betta in particular. she only has a few spots of red around her face and gills. I honestly can't tell is those are wounds or if she is just changing colors...

Can you send a pic? It’s most likely color changes.

What sized tank is it?

Ammonia?
Nitrites?
Nitrates?

Temp?

Welcome to Fishlore!

Fish can take weeks to acclimate to their new tank. A week isn't very long.

What tank size are all your fish in?
What are your water parameters?

I'm crazy and I bought another betta today, tried to keep my wallet in the car and just browse but.. yeah. hes a tiny bit beat up but he’ll heal. what I'm curious about is that when I brought him home he had a brown body and white fins with a bit of orange shimmer. hes only been in his quarantine tank for a couple hours and hes turning blue?! his fins now have a bunch of blue showing up. is this normal?

I wouldn't worry as long as he doesn't show any other signs of possible sudden illness. If anything new (and bad!) happens in the next 2-3 days then I'd post again. I can see why you bought him! Beautiful!

He may just be coloring up after all that stress. If he continues to change colors, he may have some marbling in his genes. Do you need any help on how to set up a tank for him or are you good on that? Your profile says that you don't know of the nitrogen cycle, so hopefully you just forgot to update it.

I'm all good (; ill probably end up getting him his own 5 gallon because the only slot I have left is in my 55 gallon and I keep that a little colder then hed prefer. I understand the new tank will have to cycle, probably pick up some tetra safe start because ive had good luck with that. his fins have more blue on them every time I go over to take a look, must be coloring up I guess.

I have a blue and white betta named Fancyson. Lately I’ve looked at him and thought “Does he have less white than he used to?” So I took a picture and compared that picture with a picture from the first day I got him. Sure enough, he looks different! I suspect it’s marbling, but I just want to make sure it couldn’t have been caused by stress or illness. He’s an active little guy who gets very excited about food and seems happy in his 5 gallon tank, but again just making sure this color change is natural and not something to be worried about. We’ve had him for about a month.

It's just his natural colouring.

Yes this is very normal for bettas to do. They are called marble bettas as they can change colors. It can happen quickly slowly, a bit or a lot. Looks like he will turn completely blue.

Yeah, a lot of them change colors, yours looks like he was still getting his full color when you got him (was probably still young). I had a koi plakat (white with little red and black speckles), and he actually turned completely black with a tiny bit of maroon on his tail and a little bit of blue/green on his scales! Without lighting he looked plain black, but you'd see the other colors under bright lighting.

Just though I'd add, color change is common in a lot of different fish, eg goldfish with black markings will usually completely lose all the black color and my swordtails often go through color changes too.

So many good responses! I suspected it was his natural coloring, I just wanted to be sure. Thanks everybody!

It’s called the marble jumping gene some have it, some do not. Some that have it will never change, while others can change colors multiple times over the course of their lives.

Mine changed drastically, kind of bummed me out but interesting none the less the pink and white is when I first got him, and now he’s completely blue with minimal white.

Its normal! Just a hidden color pigment he has. No white betta stays white forever

Oh ok that’s good to hear! Will he eventually all turn that color cause I do kinda like the white/pink color he is?

Cant give you define answer as I don't know what his full pigments are. He could turn blue, dark blue, black or red patches . Just have to wait and see

Bettas have a tendency to change color a lot. As long as he behaves normally, (swimming around, isn't breathing hard, good appetite, etc,) and his fins don't look damaged, then he might change color just a bit, or a whole lot. I've seen some bettas that look like yours end up looking a dark red/blue/black. He might also stay mostly light. Bettas can be huge color mysteries.
