For two years, I worked in as medical staff in an overpopulated, rural animal shelter. We had a pretty serious problem with feral cats, and an even more serious problem with KITTENS! I fostered many little kittens in my time at the shelter, but there was one particular kitten who changed my life.
Born in the shelter to an extremely stressed feral mom, the four kittens were rejected and fell ill. At five days old, it was agreed that they should be humanely euthanized, because they weren't being fed and they were obviously clinging to life. But as I held the smallest, sickest kitten in my hands, I knew I couldn't let them be put to sleep. So instead, armed with fluids and medicines, I took the four sickly kittens home. One died on the first night, while the other three grew bigger and stronger with each day.
Fast forward to months later, the kittens were extremely happy and healthy! Two of them were given to my best friend, another shelter worker, who intended to adopt the identical sisters. The kitten who had been the smallest and sickest of the four stayed with me. I was just holding on to her until she was strong enough to be put up for adoption, I told myself. But along the way, I grew so attached that I realized I simply couldn't imagine my life without her.
So I sealed the deal, signed the paperwork, and was finally able to call her my baby.
She is now eight months old, and a true beauty. Her name is Opal!

(She's the kitty in my avatar and my username is her name... If you can't tell, I'm totally in love )
