My Bad luck & betta

yea, I forgot about Betta sp. Imbellis. I think they decend from the same root betta species as the MahachaI and Smaragdina and they are beautiful. On our wild betta tank, I covered all the openings with the gripping shelf liner.. the kind with holes in it. Ours do try jumping sometimes, especially if some sudden movement spooks them, although I've found with a lot of java moss in the tank, they will dive deep into the moss more often than jumping if they get startled. I'd recommend a submersible filter, a bunch of plants and caves and plenty of java moss (and a flexible bubble wand) if you go with a tank of wilds. I think Rutilens or Albimarginatas will be our next wild bettas, but Imbellis are on the list of species that we'd love to have.

LOL.. they do love it.. Aslan went and nipped his fin again so he's been getting garlic guard drops along with fish protector and rid-fungus (and the usual vitachem) to keep any problems from coming of it -- and he loves to swim right under the bottle to get the drops.
I thaw mine in Garlic Guard for extra taste.

I noticed that my betta like the fish protector drops. They stay right int he drops' cloud.

I just read in my Barrons Betta book that Imbellis and Splendens are the same species. They can be interbred, and the name Imbellis should be discarded. They have a different look to me...so why would they do that? Does this mean they can't be kept together? I want a wild type that everyone can live together.

They can't have known very much about zoology, then. B. splendens and B. imbellis are two different closely related species. They share the same genus name (Betta), but not species name (respectively imbellis and splendens).

Wolves and dogs are related and can interbreed, but they're not the same species. Same with Imbellis and Splendens.

I want a wild type that everyone can live together.

If you follow COBettaCouple's advice on a tank setup, that's just what you'll have with Imbellis!

Hmm.. i've seen that book. That statement makes me wonder how much research they do.

It makes me wonder if all their books have some wrong info in them. I have their Angelfish book too.

Yea, it does make you question their credibility when they can print something so inaccurate.

Well it looks to me like the book was published in 2001...classification is always being debated, and maybe back then there were disagreements on the classification of imbellis...(I don't know if there were or not, just speculating).

I believe Betta imbellis was classified as a species in 1975.

But fish species are reclassified all the time...just because they were named a long time ago doesn't mean everyone agrees on it now. (again just wondering/speculating....)

Based on references to the imbellis over the years since, I'm pretty sure it's never been reclassified.

I re-read the part in the book...it was a single individual opinion about the Imbellis and splendens. This individual bred them together and got like long tailed/ fancier versions of the Imbellis dark coloring. It is in his opinion that they are the same. I wouldn't have put that little tidbit in the book.

lol.. yea, or I would've surrrounded it with "it's his opinion, not ours" warnings.
