IMO nail polish on a living snail shell would not be good. The polish would definatey interfere with a growing snail shell and I would think it would also be toxic for the snail. Are you thinking of maybe the empty oainted shells they sometimes use for hermit crabs?. Does he have a source of calcium in the tank, such as a piece of cuttlebone? Alison

I'm not an expert or anything on mystery snails so I'm afraid I can't help with the spots, but please do not paint or alter the shell in any way. The paint will slowly leech poison and kill the snail.

Back in the dark ages when I was small 60 plus years ago, they used to paint the little slider turtle shells, and then sell them in the pet store. That practice was finally outlawed when they finally figured out that it killed them after a while because the shells couldn't grow. Totally inhumane IMO. Alison

Back choy in good . Cuttlebobe is the catilage from a cuttlefish. It is used to for pet birds to give them calcium . It comes in a pkg in any pet store or supermarket that sells birdseed for pet birds. It is looks like a dry oval shape that you just hang on the side of the cage and they peck at it. For a snail just break off a piece and put it into the tank on the bottom and the snail will graze on it. It will eventually disolve, then just add another piece. It won't rot or foul the tank. Will it affect the fish?

No it won't affect the fish and they may graze on it as well or just ignore it. You can get one for anywhere from 30cents to under a dollar . some are packaged and some are just open in a big box. one should last a long time. Alison
