Tomorrow I’m getting my first order of stuff in to start creating my tank. I want to thank the following for all of the help. I may have missed a few, but I tried to include everyone.

Already ordered some soil that I really didn’t need so I’m going to have to decide to do with that. My layout is in this really ugly blueprint notes thing.

Also here’s a key to read it.
R=rocks
W=wood
The caves will be slabs that stack to probably 10-12 inches. Think Mbuna African cichlid build for that part, but with plants overgrown on it. The only way I know how to explain it.
EDIT TO AD the rock formations will be similar to what you would use if you were having mbuna. I am not keeping mbuna in this tank. I used the build like idea to explain what my idea for the rock formation is.

It’s kind of hard to read, but I plan on the clearing having white sand in the clearing separated by rocks(not sure on what kind yet). The rest of the tank will be like a rainforest, so plants that hang down. Overgrown plants. Some type of plants vines hanging over the rocks. This will create areas for the apistos to breed but also places for cories and kuhlis to hide out if they want. I don’t know how much I’m going to keep if my original design, but I believe this will be the best idea to create an ecosystem that will work for me. Oh also the clearing, I’m planning on trying to make a driftwood tree bridge over from one wood piece to the other. So the bridge will span about 10 inches probably 12. It will most likely be covered with plants that have vine like structures that will drop all the way to the bottom of the clearing. Making a curtain for fish that want to swim across the clearing, but are insecure about going through about 8-10 inches of open water. I highly doubt that, but I like to sound like I’m doing it for the fish and not myself. Lol I’m excited for the next few months. At this point I just want to know if I can pull it off if even possible.

Sounds kool.

But my visual is fuzzy. A pic would be great when you get it set up.

I will. Yeah my blueprint picture is awful looking but it’s about as close to it I could get in a rough sketch. Lol.

Are you going to use Java moss? If you use co2 it will grow slow

No, I thought I was originally, but I really have enough new stuff going on in this aquarium that I don’t want to. Maybe in a few years, but just not yet.

HI Abby974
How are you planning on stocking? Aside from the Mnubas?

I still looking for someone to compliment my Double Red APISTOS...

Only Mbunas are possible in a Mbuna tank.. aside from dither fish.

So, I honestly had NO IDEA about Mbuna Cichlids until your message. I went to look up their care and was pretty surprised at what I learned!!! I'm very impressed at your endeavor...

Would love to see what that ends up looking like. My experience with Cichlids has been limited to Apistogramma.

Aloha!

I never said I was going to have the mbuna in the tank... it’s pretty much at the age that I’m expecting to either have to put it down because it’s not gaining weight because it won’t eat enough or it will die off of old age. Just to be clear Not keeping Mbunas. Sorry for the late response. I have been in college the past few days and working on tank stuff. Oh nvm I see what you meant you thought when I said mbuna african cichlid build that I meant put mbunas in the tank. No I’m not I’m using the rock formation idea that people use when stocking mbunas. Not the actual fish don’t worry I know they’re evil and will eat other fish along with the precious plants.

Also if no one knew the occupant of my 55 a while ago was my mbuna/ mbunas at one point. They died off slowly. That’s where I got the rock formation idea. Again not keeping mbuna in the 55 for this tank idea. Never will I do mbuna with anything else. I have delt with them and I realize what they will kill.

Sorry if that sounded like I was mad. I’m just telling everyone that I would never do something as crazy as keeping mbuna with the fish I plan.
I did not mean to sound sassy or anything.
