Hello there,

I'm not an expert on Bettas but this one looks like a Half Moon betta. Hopes this helps!

Mustard gas just refers to the yellow color in the fins. I would say it is definitely one of them

You don't have him yet? Was he ordered online?

I would definitely QT him before you put him in your display tank, or atleast treat him first.

Mustard gas is a very specific type, what you have is close enough to it for breeders to consider it to be a mustard gas, but a mustard gas has a blue to green body and light orange to yellow with a thick black or blue edging to all fins. Yours has a black base body with blue over it in the scales, the fins are a little two dark, he would be considered just a bi-color. Mustards are pretty much butterfly color pattern, however it is also just a color name that has been muddied and taken by just about every breeder to try and sell the fish.

I would consider this to be a chocolate rather than mustard gas. But that's me.

Going from the post above, the original mustard gas line is pretty much 'lost':

Thank you aussieJJDude I have researxhed about jude als and I know this isn't an original mg but one has to womder if the guy is still out there some where .Its so sad what happened to him and I honestly am angered by it .I feel for the guy .As much I love the name mustard gas I know they aren't his line. I hope one day he gets bacj into it and takes his name (betta) back . but makes you wonder if he is still out there breeding.

Whatever he is , he's beautiful and better looking than the "true" Mustard Gas in my opinion.

Sooo happy! Got my little guy today! It took long but he is alive, well and seems happy. He is a jeuvenile .he looked much bigger with those close up pictures .I am absolutely satisfied . I bought a female betta as well and have her in her own tank and one day I'll breed the two .She is dark blue with green tint and they are the same age, luckily, she is a halfmoon. I named her Aurora, and I was thinking of naming my boy borealis or boris. Haven't decided yet. He is a sweet betta.

haha I couldn't agree more! Goldiemom I bought him last weekend and went out yesterday and bought a female and I'm already talking about buying more females and making a sorority tank. oh my, am I in trouble haha. They are just so fun but you have to be careful when purchasing them due to their temperament. I have another female and she can't stand other fish. So sad but it is what it is .So she has her own tank . lol.

He looks healthy and very nice looking. I'm glad he arrived in such good shape because I was a little worried he wouldn't. Congratulations and I hope he has a good long life.

Thank you very much. Yeah, my husband lucked out with this seller .When he arrived he was calm and packaged extremely well. You can tell he cares a lot about the fish he breeds. Amazing.
