MTS how bad are they?

I bought some java moss at the lfs and there are loads of little teeny MTS in the bowl Im soaking them in. There were scuds in there too that went directly in the 5g. Do they lay eggs in plants? And....how bad are they really? Just wanted to know more about the eggs though. If I nuke the plants can there still be eggs in there?

They're not really that bad. One of the best to stir up the substrate for those nice plant roots.

As for killing MTS eggs... good luck. Anything sufficient to kill the eggs will probably kill the plant too. After the nuclear apocalypse the world will be full of roaches and MTS living off twinkies.

MTS is one snail that has a will to live. Some survive bleach dips/soaking. I keep them or try to. They burrow in the substrate to keep things stirred around. They do a good job cleaning as well.

Thats sorta what I figured. I don't mind Rams and MTS I don't care much for Bladders. I had one in my 5 from some other plants and it died.

Don't forget mosquitos in that apocalypse.

I keep mts in all tanks. Except with the loaches. That tank there snacks. Great for plants.

I haven't seen the scuds since I let them loose. Go figure.
Ok I won't worry about the MTS then.

I'm dripping some Yellow Neo's right now! I figured I have Cherry and Yellow I won't get brown....Or will I? I don't care they will look cool and I don't plan on selling them.

MTS are probably my favorite snails. And someone beat me to saying that they are livebearers.

There also only needs to be 2 in a tank to reproduce. Idk the term but I believe they change from a female to a male if both sex are not present. Lol nature finds a way for them.

Is it hermaphrodite? I forgot

I haven't seen any signs of Bladder or RH. I am carefully sifting through the moss to get all the gravel and stuff out of it.

I totally forgot they were livebearers! But what I said about eggs applies to the baby snails too. Nothing changes lol

Apparently you only need 1! They will change to female and reproduce asexually (via cloning) with only 1 present. I love them personally, I think they look nice and they keep my substrate healthy. RIP my carpeting plants tho

That was my hope when I got blue and red, that I'd get purple haha. I was told no, cause they get their colour through mutation then breeding for it.

However! I now have some shrimp that are striped or mottled with blue and red. So that's awesome. Both colours are kinda washed out, but it looks cool

Ahh thats it, there is so much controversial information on snails it all bleeds together for me. Lol I only look it up when I get new snails.

I was thinking Red and Yellows wouldn't be bad. My Husband wanted blues. I didn't want brown.....lol

I've been wanting some MTS... gotta get some at some point... I have bladder and rams... I like the rams, but the bladders are great puffer food (my puffers seem to prefer them over rams anyhow).

Scuds can be hard to spot.. I have a 5 gallon with a bunch of them, unless I catch them swimming I dont seem to notice them.

Any cherry shrimp color can lead to brown. Cull the browns for stronger colors.

Really? I've never seen any brown, mine seem to just be partly clear if not boldly coloured

I get browns regularly. I would cull them by adding to my discus tank. The shrimp tank went bright red when I removed the browns and lesser reds.

My rosy barbs keep all small snails in check. During the cycling there were ramshorns breeding like crazy, some bladder snails, I've seen a few MTS too. When I got the barbs, the first few days I'd see them hunting small snails. I now only have a handful of larger ramshorn snails roaming here and there (and mystery snails that I got intentionally). In small amounts like that I like them, they really complement all the driftwood I have.
