I've never owned a pleco, but you sure are making them look tempting!

    Wow that's pink.

It looks very much like a Common. Can we have a close-up?

I agree, looks like a common. Why so much sand in the 3rd pic?

it very much is a common pleco. will take a close up later once i am home.
yes i know it is a lot of sand, i had a tank that was a 29 gallon and it started to leak, so i moved it all to a 10 gallon. the 29 gallon was being cycled, at the time.

I'm sorry to say that common plecos get huge and need humongous tanks or else they'll get stunted. Are you planning on upgrading?

have a 75 gallon in my room with nothing in it yet, no water at all. i need to move to a 1st flr or bsmt for that tank. i live on the 4th floor which is really an attic. so that is pending until i move.

The 75 gallon still wont be big enough to accomodate a common pleco. They get up to 20" or more.

Problem with that is, you might not get around to returning or rehoming him until it's too late. When they get stunted, technically speaking they can't really "outgrow" the size of the tank, so it might be hard to catch it until it's too late, I'm afraid. I'm sorry if I'm coming across as mean or rude, please forgive me if I am.

I think a 125 or 150 long would be the smallest a full grown common could comfortably live in. Remember its has to be able to turn around in there and it shouldnt be stretched from one end to the other.

If it is any peace of mind, it will take about 10 years to get 12 inches. It will keep growing from there if the tank is big enough. They can live 20-30 years in captivity and never stops growing, meaning 24"+ is very possible if it lives long enough.

Did you make a rookie mistake by getting a common pleco?

Can't blame him if he did, I made a rookie mistake of putting a male sailfin molly in a 10g for a while before I returned him.......

Now you know to stop going there and find a new LFS! I usually test the people when I go to a new store, something like "what can I put in a 10g?". If they tell me "this" and point at a common, I probably just walk out or try not to buy anything if I'm looking around.
